Twenty-five mountaineers, all from the Axarquia area and various other areas in Andalucia, succeeded in reaching the summit of Mulhacen, and all for the best of causes. This peak represents the highest point across the entire Iberian Peninsula and rises to 3,482 metres. The climbers completed the tenth Mulhacen Challenge organised by Club Deportivo Playas de Torre del Mar to increase visibility for the battle against childhood cancer. They acted in support of AVOI, the Association of Volunteers for Childhood Oncology, by carrying its message to the top.

Summit success building awareness for young cancer patients

Mountaineers from different parts of the region joined this high-level mountain crossing in Sierra Nevada to draw public attention to childhood cancer issues and back AVOI activities. Reaching the summit after a demanding journey showed the strength people find when working as one toward a shared goal.

Gratitude shared by AVOI delegate in Torre del Mar

Emilio Gil, who serves as the AVOI delegate for the Axarquia area, conveyed deep thanks to the organising club and all public and private partners who helped make the initiative possible when the sportspeople returned to Torre del Mar. He pointed out that events of this nature play an essential role in spreading knowledge about the association work and encourage early detection of the illness.

Club coordinator praises team camaraderie and pride

Pepito Acosta, who coordinated the hiking and mountaineering section within Club Deportivo Playas de Torre del Mar, spoke of the pride the club felt in serving as AVOI ambassadors on the Sierra Nevada expedition. Acosta explained that the group faced two days of intense travel and encountered both pleasure and hardship in equal parts. Humility and outstanding team spirit displayed by every participant throughout the challenge made the whole undertaking worthwhile.

Local council and business partners enable initiative

Support came from the deputy mayoral office in Torre del Mar and the sports department of Velez-Malaga council. Several dedicated businesses from the local district also provided sponsorship, including Sigfrido Fruit, E3 Ventanas and Passivhaus, Eiser Gardening and Inmobiliaria Carlos Parra. Their contributions helped make the plan a reality and showed the wide commitment in the area to support families affected by childhood cancer.
