25-Year-Old Man critically injured by falling tree branch in Madrid

A 25-year-old man was seriously injured after a tree branch fell on him on Thursday night in the Madrid neighbourhood of Carabanchel, according to a spokesperson for “Emergencies Madrid”.

The accident occurred around midnight in Plaza San Vicente de Paúl, in the southern district of the capital, near the Opañel metro station. Paramedics from Samur-Civil Protection responded to the scene and stabilised the victim, who was in serious condition.

The injured person was evacuated to the San Carlos Clinical Hospital in a medical convoy escorted by Madrid Municipal Police officers, the same sources indicated.

Members of the Madrid City Council Fire Department were responsible for cutting up the fallen branch and levelling the affected tree, to prevent further collapse.

According to city officials, the tree had been inspected earlier this year and was deemed in good health, with maintenance performed in 2022 and 2024.

Despite the absence of strong winds at the time, experts suggest that extreme heat can weaken trees, potentially leading to sudden branch failures.

This incident occurred during an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching 32.3°C on Thursday and expected to rise to 35°C on Friday.

In response to the heat, the city has temporarily closed major parks, including El Retiro, to ensure public safety.

This marks the first serious tree-related accident in Madrid in over a year. Previous incidents include a 23-year-old woman who died in November 2023 after a tree fell on her during Storm Ciaran, and a 38-year-old man who was fatally struck by a 400-kilogram branch in El Retiro Park in 2018.

City officials emphasise that while regular inspections are conducted, unforeseen factors like extreme weather conditions can still lead to such tragic events.

A MAN has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the abuse, rape and sexual assault of his female domestic worker.

The abuse started just three days after her first day of work, when she was hired to assist the man at his Madrid apartment in April 2019.

According to the ruling issued by the Supreme Court, which DiarioSur reported on, the man groped her buttocks while she was serving food.

She immediately criticised his behaviour, but the abuse continued. He said no one would believe her if she reported him, because she was ‘black’ and an ‘illegal immigrant’ whereas he was a Spanish citizen.

On day ten of her employment, he demanded she strip and dance for him at a Fuengirola hotel, threatening to leave her without pay if she did not obey. He then raped her.

Back in Madrid, she was able to grab her cellphone, which the defendant hid under his pillow, lock herself in the bathroom and call the police for help.

The police had previously received calls relating to similar incidents occurring to another foreign woman working at the home as a live-in domestic worker.

The man was also ordered to pay the victim €8,250 in compensation for moral damages and minor injuries sustained in the struggle. The ruling cannot be appealed.

Spanish tavern challenges Hemingway’s favourite Madrid eatery for title of World’s Oldest Restaurant – but Italy also has a challenger

FOR years Madrid’s legendary Sobrino de Botin has proudly held the Guinness World Record for being the planet’s oldest restaurant –  but now it is being challenged.

Founded in 1725, this culinary icon – a favourite of literary giants like Ernest Hemingway – celebrated 300 years of serving up classic Spanish fare earlier this year.

Its famous wood-fire oven and prime spot near Plaza Mayor have long cemented its place in history.

But now, another Madrid eatery, Casa Pedro, is making a daring claim: “We’re even older!”

The restaurant’s owners are convinced their establishment survived the brutal War of Spanish Succession in the early 1700s, which would put its opening date firmly before Botin’s.

The challenger

“It’s really frustrating when you say, ‘Yes, we’ve been around since 1702’, but… you can’t prove it,” admits Irene Guiñales, the eighth-generation owner and manager, whose family has run the place for centuries.

“If you look at the restaurant’s logo, it says ‘Casa Pedro, since 1702,’ so we said, ‘Damn it, let’s try to prove it!’,” she told Euronews.

The Guiñales family has now hired a historian, who has unearthed documents proving Casa Pedro was cooking as far back as 1750. But the hunt is on for that crucial evidence pushing the date back to 1702.

But just when you thought this Spanish showdown couldn’t get spicier, a sneaky Italian rival has entered the ring. La Campana, a trattoria in Rome’s historic centre, boasts ‘more than 500 years of operation’, citing ancient documents and its own self-published history.

Its owners are now reportedly compiling all the necessary paperwork to challenge both Spanish contenders for the world’s oldest title.
