Exciting advances mark the ongoing development of Granada’s ambitious coastal walkway project known as the Senda Litoral footpath which will follow Spain’s entire southern and eastern coastline.
Major connections for coastal towns
The Granada Provincial Council is coordinating the 82.3-kilometre plan uniting ten coastal towns from Almuñecar to La Rabita. Towns including Motril, Salobreña, Albuñol, Gualchos-Castell de Ferro, Torrenueva Costa, Sorvilán, Rubite, Polopos-La Mamola and Lújar will gain seamless paths for walking and cycling. Collaboration involves local councils plus regional bodies handling coasts, the environment and culture. Initial projects were drafted around 2021 after earlier tenders, with work now progressing across planned sections.
Four viewpoint bridges follow the route
Plans incorporate not only footpaths but also four striking viewpoint bridges at key scenic spots. One notable structure will cross Playa Granada together with the Hotel Impressive to connect areas directly with Salobreña. Another pedestrian crossing will link Cabo Sacratif safely over the N-340 road towards Carchuna Calahonda. These features deliver much-needed accessibility while offering breathtaking sea views and safe passage away from traffic.
Beach restoration work progresses in key areas
Recent activity in Albuñol focuses on El Pozuelo beach. Local authorities there have cleared former greenhouse sites to restore the shoreline. Workers will install new walkways while adding lighting, picnic zones, playgrounds and sports facilities. Separate sections between Almuñecar and Salobreña see active development, with the third phase now in drafting stages from Playa de las Azucenas in Torrenueva Costa to Carchuna.
Wider links promise epic foot-powered journeys
Visitors from Axarquia will gain exciting new possibilities. Malaga province’s Senda Litoral, largely complete from Manilva to Nerja and covering around 160 kilometres, means extended journeys become feasible across the Eastern Costa del Sol to Costa Tropical. Future connections are said to one day allow travel along much of Spain’s Mediterranean coast from Gibraltar towards Catalonia.
