Residents and businesses across the Axarquia region of Malaga are celebrating due to the first time in a long while they can now enjoy unrestricted access to drinking water following a major announcement this Friday, March 27. Public water company Axaragua has officially informed all local councils that drought-related limitations, imposed in May 2024 during a period of severe scarcity in the Viñuela-Axarquia system, no longer apply.

Improved reservoir levels bring relief

Recent assessments by the Drought Management Committee for the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins confirmed a return to normal conditions. Abundant rainfall over recent months has dramatically increased water resources. La Viñuela reservoir currently holds approximately 148.63 cubic hectometres, far exceeding the normal March levels threshold of 97.4 cubic hectometres outlined in the Special Drought Plan.

What this means

Prohibitions on refilling private and public swimming pools, except those with recirculation systems, have ended. Decorative fountains without automatic shut-off valves can resume operation. Beach facilities in coastal towns, including Rincon de la Victoria, Velez-Malaga, Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja, will reactivate showers and footbaths in time for Easter, improving visitor experiences during peak tourism season.

Local authorities had previously sought approvals for seawater use in these installations to promote sustainability. A feasibility study now paves the way for further optimisation of resources.

Despite the excellent reservoir status, councils are being urged to maintain continued vigilance. Responsible consumption remains essential to prevent any return to crisis conditions. Small daily actions, such as mindful usage, collectively secure long-term water security, so no car washing in the street remains a firm rule.

Future investments safeguard supply

Axaragua continues proactive infrastructure work, including upgrades to wastewater treatment plants. Delivery of the desalination plant preliminary project to central government will be another step toward diversified water sources.

This development brings absolute reassurance to councils, families, tourism operators and agricultural producers who endured the prolonged drought. Sustained collective commitment ensures the Axarquia avoids repeating past difficulties, supporting both residents and the vital local economy.
