British tourists keep fingers crossed as Spanish authorities race to clear up beaches ahead of the Easter holidays in the Costa del Sol

AS Easter approaches, British tourists are hoping for pristine beaches as Spanish authorities race to clean up the coastline ahead of the holiday season.

The Costa del Sol, a popular destination for Brits, has been receiving a major boost thanks to significant improvements to its beaches.

From November 2024 to March 2025, the Spanish government has invested €2.1 million to enhance 21 beaches across nine municipalities in Malaga.

The Strategy for the Protection of the Malaga Coast, approved by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge in 2022, focuses on sand replenishment and beach maintenance.

This large-scale initiative is the largest beach improvement project in Malaga’s history, with €1.3 million allocated for the western coast and €800,000 for the eastern coast.

The work includes moving excess sand to areas where it is deficient, removing human-made debris, and profiling the beaches to ensure a more natural dynamic.

Javier Salas, Deputy Delegate of the Government in Malaga, shared that the results so far have been very positive, ensuring a much-improved coastline for locals and tourists alike.

“These actions have shown positive results, with the coastline performing well after the work,” he said to Europa Press

Authorities are continuing to work on nine more beaches in eight municipalities, with further improvements planned throughout April and May.

British holidaymakers visiting this Easter can look forward to enjoying the beautiful, clean beaches of the Costa del Sol.

The Marbella city council has begun the installation of 40 new public toilet modules in the esplanade of the municipality, an action that will be completed before the start of the summer.

Mayor Ángeles Muñóz emphasized that these modern restrooms are “more in keeping with the appearance and needs of the city“. These facilities stand out for being modern, functional and domotised, with the aim of improving services for both residents and tourists. Muñoz also made a point to the city’s compromise with keeping these facilities clean and operational: “It is a public asset and it is very important to look after it”.

Each module will have four toilets, and will operate automatically from 7am to 11pm. They are designed with sustainability criteria in mind, as they are powered by solar energy. The first module is already operational on Levante Beach in Puerto Banús, while the rest of the facilities will be opened progressively during the months of April and May, with the aim of being fully operational for the high season.

The total investment for this project amounts to 1.2 million euros, and is co-financed through a National Tourist Plan, an agreement signed between the local government and the Andalusian Regional Government.

THE iconic chiringuitos of Andalucia are making their return this week as Semana Santa heralds the official start of the region’s beach bar season.

The Andalucian Beach Business Owners Association (Faeplayas) has shared a positive outlook for the upcoming months, with expectations for a bustling summer ahead.

These beach bars, which typically operate from Easter through October, play a significant role in the region’s vibrant coastal tourism.

While some chiringuitos are seasonal, granted four-year openings under beach management plans, others boast long-term 30-year concessions.

Areas such as Malaga and Granada feature a higher number of year-round establishments, while Cadiz and Huelva are known for their seasonal spots.

Almeria sees a mix, depending on the location.

With favourable weather expected this Easter, Faeplayas is optimistic that the season will start strong, especially after last month’s rain and storms disrupted parts of the region.

For many beachgoers, the return of the chiringuitos signifies the official kick-off to a summer of sun, sea, and delicious local fare.

MANILVA will soon open its first ‘doggy beach’. By Easter, you will be able to enjoy what the many beaches on the Costa del Sol have to offer with your pets.

The ‘doggy beach’ is located on Playa de las Arenas, approximately 5km south of San Luis de Sabinillas, not far from Punta Chullera.

If you want to visit the beach, you should park in the ‘Parking Playa’ area, right next to the Seaside Grill & Bar, along the A-7 coastal road.

Be warned, because parking spaces are limited, especially in the summer months.

There are two areas you can take your dog to. If you follow the waypoints to the left, you’ll be taken to a dog-friendly beach.

There you can take your dog with you on the beach, but it’s important to keep your canine on a leash, so that they can’t disturb others.

If you follow the waypoints to the right, you’ll end up at a leash-free area on the sand.

There, your dog can do whatever they please, as long as you make sure they stay between the ropes.

But before you rock-up at the beach, ready to enjoy sea, sand and sun with your furry friend in tow, note the following common rules and regulations:

  • Keep your pet under control.
  • Collect your dog’s excrement and deposit it in the authorised bins.
  • Do not disturb other users of the beach.
  • Keep your dog’s vaccination card up to date.
  • If the dog is a potentially dangerous breed or weighs more than 20kg, it must kept on the leash and muzzled.

Of the whole Costa del Sol, Malaga stands out by having the most dog-friendly beaches.

On this website, you can find a map of dog beaches in Spain. Keep in mind that the last update was in 2024.
