Cudeca Hospice has launched an intensified fundraising push as it enters the final days of its “Eres Pieza Clave” campaign, with €268,000 still needed to maintain its Inpatient Unit. The campaign target stands at €355,000, required to cover the portion of annual costs not funded by public health support.
Based in Benalmádena, the non-profit organisation confirmed on Friday, December 26, that €87,833 had been raised so far through more than 100 donations. With the closing date approaching, the Hospice is calling on individuals, businesses and institutions to step forward.
The Inpatient Unit plays a central role in Cudeca’s palliative care system and marks 20 years of continuous service. Each year it supports over 240 patients with complex medical needs, as well as their families, working alongside home care teams to provide continuity of support.
Operating costs for the unit reach €735,000 annually. The Andalusian Health Service contributes €380,000, leaving a gap of €355,000 that must be covered through fundraising. Expenditure includes staffing costs of €190,774.05, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies at €68,244.95, food at €32,798.90, utilities and consumables at €30,802.26, maintenance at €17,839.87, and other purchases totalling €14,539.97.
Marisa Martín, Manager and Medical Director of Cudeca Hospice, stressed that the appeal is about sustaining standards rather than scaling back. “We are not talking about closing or stopping care; we are talking about being able to continue providing care as we do: with time, with full teams, and with the comprehensive attention that every person deserves,” she said.
Cudeca’s approach integrates medical and nursing care with psychological, social and emotional support. Maintaining this structure depends on stable teams, ongoing training and facilities designed for wellbeing. In 2024, the organisation cared for 1,934 people, and demand has increased by 22.4 per cent over the past five years.
The Hospice emphasises that palliative care extends beyond clinical treatment, focusing on dignity and relief during a critical stage of life. It describes the current appeal as a shared responsibility.
Donations can be made online at www.erespiezaclave.org, via Bizum using code 07761, or by bank transfer to la Caixa (ES11 2100 9032 3722 0010 8366). Contributions are also accepted at the Cudeca Centre in Benalmádena and at its charity shops, where donors receive a puzzle-piece keyring as thanks. Donations are tax-deductible, up to 80 per cent of the first €250 for individuals and 40 per cent for legal entities.
Cudeca Hospice has provided free professional palliative care for more than 30 years and is urging the public to help ensure this work continues.
