Forte Village boasts an impressive culinary portfolio, including 27 restaurants, more than 100 chefs, and a vast wine cellar exceeding 600 labels. This one-night event transported diners to one of the Mediterranean’s most celebrated destinations without even leaving Marbella.

Gerry Hannam from Save A Life shared details of the group’s very first CPR and defibrillator training course, which took place on Saturday, April 18. Eleven participants gained hands-on experience under the guidance of Nic and Alex from Diving with Nic. Organiser Daniela Wenk received warm thanks for coordinating this vital community event in Calahonda.

Save A Life initiative grows from personal trauma

Cardiac arrest survivor Gerry Hannam and wife Jenny launched the campaign last summer after Gerry owed his own survival to a public defibrillator in the UK. Save A Life has since installed ten defibrillators across Mijas, Fuengirola and Alhaurin el Grande, with four units now sited in Calahonda itself. Security patrol cars carry extra devices marked by green heart stickers, while public maps help residents locate equipment quickly. Recent placements include a unit at a local school in memory of two-year-old Milas, whose family attended the inauguration alongside the Hannams and their daughter Charlotte.

Affordable courses prepare everyone for emergencies

Participants learned essential techniques, including basic anatomy of cardiac arrest, recognition of symptoms, and correct use of automated external defibrillators. Nic and Alex emphasised keeping patients alive until professional help arrives, drawing on real examples where quick action succeeded. Courses run for four hours and cost just €35 per person, half the normal rate,  thanks to sponsorship from Diving with Nic. Complimentary drinks and snacks from Finca Naundrup added to the welcoming atmosphere.

Community members encouraged to book now

Future sessions will follow regularly because anyone might face an emergency where these skills make the difference between life and death. Residents can join reduced-price courses with the team from Diving with Nic by contacting Save A Life directly. Gerry Hannam stresses that modern defibrillators talk users through every step and cannot cause harm or mistakes, removing any fear of legal issues when attempting to help. Sign up today and gain confidence that could prove life-savingly decisive one day.

Contact the Save a Life team via their Facebook account to get involved and be ready to Save a Life.

Expats who relocate to Spain frequently choose isolation rather than reaching out to others nearby. Some individuals lose a partner through death or separation and then encounter complete solitude in their new life abroad. Age Concern exists to prevent such situations by encouraging expats to stick together and form bonds across Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Mijas.

Age Concern organised a coach trip on Wednesday, April 15, to the town of Estepona. Seniors from the area enjoyed exploration, sea air and opportunities for social connection. These excursions offer much more than a simple day away from home because they act as important lifelines for community members here.

Social benefits from Age Concern trips

Older residents, particularly those residing alone or separated from relatives, acquire multiple key advantages from participation in these outings. Loneliness damages mental health badly, so group excursions supply organised ways to meet fresh faces and cultivate strong friendships.

Getting outside regularly supports gentle exercise combined with mental engagement from different sights, sounds and cultural moments.

Many seniors feel reluctant about independent travel, so organised trips take away planning burdens and supply safe transport plus helpful company as everyone travels comfortably knowing assistance remains available throughout the day.

Having future activities planned ahead generates positive expectations that lift spirits psychologically and renew community ties.

Volunteer and participation options at Age Concern

Anyone who missed the Estepona excursion accesses information on upcoming events through local Age Concern drop-in centres in the Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Mijas areas. Additional volunteers make possible more regular social programmes for everyone. Joining brings chances to stay informed about events in Spain or receive guidance on tasks that challenge foreigners while enjoying casual conversations with people who understand exactly what life here involves. Many expats share similar backgrounds, so participants discover others just like themselves.
