Fuengirola is set to celebrate its strong Nordic links with a community event in Los Pacos on Saturday, April 11, and local residents are being invited along too.
The event will take place at Parque de Los Deportes from 12pm, with organisers promising a lively afternoon of music, food and cultural exchange in one of the town’s best-known international neighbourhoods.
Local Scandinavian music groups are set to perform
According to Fuengirola Town Hall, the day is being organised as a get-together with the Nordic community, but it is very much intended for the wider public as well. The programme will include performances by local and Scandinavian music groups, as well as a paella and drinks tasting for attendees.
Among those due to appear are the Chassé dance academy and Scandinavian acts including Swedish band Dance & Dreams, giving the event a mix of local flavour and Nordic atmosphere.
The day is open to the wider public to strengthen bonds within the community
Town hall representatives said the idea is to encourage and strengthen bonds between local residents and people from countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, all of whom form an important part of Fuengirola’s international population. Officials say there are close to 10,000 residents of Nordic origin living in the town, with a particularly strong presence in Los Pacos Norte.
For many locals, that will come as no surprise. Los Pacos has long been one of the most international parts of Fuengirola, and this latest event reflects the area’s well-established links with northern European residents.
The event becomes one of many events on the coast to celebrate different traditions and cultures
The town hall announcement presents it as a fresh themed community event. Fuengirola is, of course, no stranger to multicultural celebrations. International events such as Fuengirola’s own Feria Internacional de los Países is a huge part of the town’s calendar, and the Nordic day fits neatly into the wider Costa del Sol tradition of events that bring different resident communities into the spotlight. Similar examples can be found elsewhere on the coast, including Benalmadena’s International Festival of Cultures and Estepona’s Foreign Resident Day, both of which also celebrate the area’s international mix through food, music, traditions and community participation.
