Fifteen sailing boats took part in the ninth Costa Tropical Regatta held this past weekend along the Granada coast. All put together by Motril Real Club Nautico, the event received sponsorship from Granada Provincial Council plus collaboration from Motril Port Authority and the Tropical Coast Municipal Association.
President Rafael Caballero of the Tropical Coast Municipal Association gave a very positive assessment of proceedings. He said how the regatta once again confirms the Costa Tropical as a leading sailing destination within Andalucía.
Competition routes and conditions prove ideal
Two days of competition allowed boats to traverse waters between Motril, Almuñécar and Castell de Ferro. Routes demonstrated excellent conditions for sailing and other nautical sports in the area.
Caballero pointed out that the Costa Tropical Regatta functions as a superb instrument for promoting the shoreline by revealing its landscape richness and potential for year-round active and sports tourism to competitors and visitors.
Racing took place according to Andalusian Sailing Federation norms. Points counted towards the Andalusian ORC Cruiser Championship. Crews also enjoyed activities including institutional reception, team social gatherings and trophy presentations.
Winners claim prizes after close racing
Overall results saw Agapantux finish first under skipper Pablo Villar from Sotogrande Maritime Club. Luna-Varadero Isla Verde came second with Antonio Infante at the helm representing Algeciras Nautical Club. Pulpo Negro took third place, captained by Giampiero Giannetti from Motril Nautical Club.
Cash prizes of €600, €300 and €150 rewarded the first-, second- and third-placed crews, respectively.
Regatta becomes top Andalucian sailing events
The ninth running of the Costa Tropical Regatta has confirmed its place as one of the main fixtures on the Andalucian nautical calendar. The event combines competition with social interaction and tourism promotion for the area.
Many crews commented favourably on the race organisation and scenic routes. This feedback supports plans for future growth.
