Officials in Belgium have announced they have made arrests on Thursday, March 13 during their investigation into corruption.

The corruption has been linked to the European Parliament. Reports suggest that Chinese owned company Huawei bribed EU officials to help further their own company’s policies. The officials are both past representatives and current according to reports. Police officers carried out searches in Belgium, in Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia and outside of Belgian’s borders in Portugal.

Prosecutors have said that suspects will need to answer to their alleged “involvement in active corruption within the European Parliament, as well as for forgery and use of forgeries”. The EU parliament has said as always, they are fully cooperating with the judicial authorities. Reports have mentioned that 15 people are under suspicion.

From mobile phone maker to suspected spying

Certain nations including the USA have banned elements of Huawei’s products, claiming they pose a security risk and facilitate spying on other nations from China. Huawei have denied these allegations. The Chinese tech giant makes mobile phones and networking equipment. They have been caught in the middle of rising tensions regarding technology trade between China and the USA.

Huawei considered a material risk when compared to other 5G suppliers

European Commission representative, Thomas Regnier, said that Huawei posed a “materially higher risk than other 5G suppliers”. He was speaking of 5G security and its importance to the European economy. He went as far as to say that EU member states should “to restrict or to exclude Huawei from their 5G networks” swiftly.

Federal prosecutors have stated, without mentioning specific companies, that corruption was present “from 2021 to the present day”, and that those acts of corruption included “remuneration for taking political positions or excessive gifts.”

Torre del Mar is set to receive a €1.6 million investment from the Malaga Provincial Council in order to improve the use of reclaimed water for irrigation and also upgrade its sanitation system. The project will reduce salinity levels in wastewater collectors, making recycled water more suitable for places like parks, agriculture, and public spaces.

Malaga’s provincial president, Francisco Salado, visited the site this week alongside Velez-Malaga mayor Jesús Lupiáñez, Axarquía municipal association president Jorge Martín, and beach councilor David Vilches.

The plan involves two essential projects, according to the local authorities. The first, a €1.2 million initiative managed by Aqualia, will install a new sanitation pipeline along the Paseo de Larios. The second one has a budget of €423,325 and is led by Axaragua. Its goal is to reinforce a major sewage collector running from Torre del Mar to the wastewater pumping station.

Mayor Lupiáñez pointed out that these improvements will enhance water management and also strengthen local infrastructure in Torre del Mar. The upgrades aim to optimize water resources in the whole Axarquia region, which will benefit both residents and farmers.
