Long before his son, David Bisbal, reached international fame, Jose Bisbal was the first Spanish boxing champion born in Almeria. His influence on the sport was enormous, inspiring a whole new generating of boxers.
Jose Bisbal became a beloved figure in Almería when he won the national bantamweight title in 1963, the first of many major wins. Throughout his illustrious career, Bisbal would go on to be crowned Spanish boxing champion seven times, achieving 49 wins, 35 losses, and nine draws.
Emotional tribute to Jose Bisbal
Earlier in the year, Jose passed peacefully at age 84 from Alzheimer’s disease. Following his passing, family, friends and fans filled the Olimpo Box Centre in San Isidro, gathering to pay tribute and say their final goodbyes to the local hero. The event drew a large crowd, reflecting the deep admiration held for Bisbal within the boxing community.
A heavy silence settled over the stands, full to the rafters with supporters, as a commemorative video played. The video walked audiences through the timeline of Bisbal’s tremendous sporting career, revisiting his greatest achievements.

Juan Bisbal, Jose’s brother, stood in the centre of the ring and gave a moving speech. He spoke of his brother’s legacy and his family’s gratitude for all the support they have received since his passing.
High-level boxing honours his legacy
Following this touching tribute, the sport Bisbal loved so much took centre stage with fifteen electric boxing bouts were contested, some of which were decisive matches for the Andalusian Championship.
One highlight of the night was when Samuel “La Escencia” Molina stepped in the ring opposite Mexican boxer Luis Enrique Montelongo. It was a nail-biting fight that ultimately saw Molina’s hand raised in victory in a points decision as the boxer from Malaga cemented his status as the best boxer in Spain.
The evening successfully combined remembrance with top-level sport, ensuring that Jose Bisbal’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
