An extremely popular event that hundreds of thousands of people attend every year, the countdown to this year’s excitement has already begun.

First held in December 1994, the event, which at the time involved only eight countries, has grown to an anticipated 33 countries taking part this year.

International Fair of Countries to take place between April 30 and May 4

While the Town Hall has not been able to put an exact number on how many visitors this event attracts each year, they have said that it surpasses the numbers of some of the other popular activities, including the Fair dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario, the Carmen evening, and the Marenostrum Music Festival.

This year’s Fair will take place between April 30 and May 4, so make a note in your diaries now. One aspect you will not want to miss is the parade, which is said to be bigger and better than ever. It will commence on May 1, starting at 11.30am at the Plaza de España and arriving at the fairgrounds at around 1.00pm.

Special train timetable for International Fair of Countries 2025

Each country will have its own stall, which will be decorated to reflect its particular culture. There will be craft displays, live music, and lots of delicious foods to try, reflecting the gastronomic delights of those participating. The stalls will remain open from 1.00pm until 2.00am or 4.00am, depending on whether the following day is a working day or not.

In readiness for such an influx of visitors and in response to overcrowding issues that occurred last year, a number of safety measures have been put in place. For example, the side streets of the fairgrounds and those at the back of the stands will be fully used to avoid too many people congregating in the central aisles.

In addition, to encourage more people to leave their cars at home, there will be a special train timetable: the trains will run every twenty minutes between 10.20pm and 12.20am. For those still revelling in the festivities, there will also be trains leaving at 5.00am and 5.20am.

€20 Million For Water Supply

Following repeated damage to aging infrastructure, the Axarquia Commonwealth is moving forward with two large-scale projects aimed at modernizing the region’s water supply network. The investment, which totals nearly €20 million, will be partially funded by the Junta de Andalucía and the Málaga Provincial Council.

In November 2024, a severe storm (DANA) caused serious flooding in Benamargosa, damaging the water supply to several towns, including Cutar, El Borge, Almachar, and Comares. A more recent fault in the valley of the Benamargosa River highlighted ongoing issues caused by outdated piping.

“These are ambitious plans that would improve connections to several municipalities in the region,” said Jorge Martín, president of the Axarquia Commonwealth. The first project will lay a new, wider pipeline between El Trapiche (Velez-Malaga) and Comares, improving supply to Colmenar and Riogordo.

A second project has the goal to reach Moclinejo and El Valdes, addressing similar problems in the Benagalbon River area. The objective is to increase water flow during high-demand summer months, with 300 mm-wide piping planned.

The revised route could also benefit other towns, such as Periana and La Viñuela. Recently, both have struggled with summer shortages. “These are two separate projects, one estimated at €10.5 million and the other at just under €9 million,” explained Martín.

He added that Axaragua, the local water company, cannot bear the cost alone and is relying on public funding. No timeline has been confirmed yet.

The Origins: World Book And Copyright Day

Happy World Book and Copyright Day, it might seem like a bit of a mouthful, but for those bookworms amongst us April 23 is a UNESCO event celebrating books and authors.

But why do we celebrate the worldwide event? And what is its purpose? April 23, according to UNESCO, “holds immense symbolism in world literature, marking the death of several renowned authors.” The English William Shakespeare and the Spanish Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, are amongst those whose legacy is remembered on World Book and Copyright Day. A legacy that focuses with hope on education and literacy around the world.

World Book Day’s origins are firmly rooted in Spanish literary history and culture.

The original world book day actually began in Spain. According to the association of publishers: “The celebration goes back to ‘La Diada de Sant Jordi’, or the Festival of St George, which is Catalunya’s version of Valentine’s Day, when people give each other red roses—but also books.” The festival of Saint George falls on April 23.

But Spain’s association with World Book day goes even further than this, as according to the association of publishers in 1995, “the UNESCO Director General, Federico Mayor- a Spanish scientist, scholar, politician, diplomat and poet sent a letter to Pere Vicens, president of the Spanish Publishers Association (La Federación de Gremios de Editores de España), informing him that UNESCO had unanimously decided to declare the 23rd of April as ‘World Book and Copyright Day”.

Although in many countries there are separate World Book Days as with The UK and Ireland both of which celebrate the event in early March.

How is UNESCO celebrating this year?

World Book and Copyright Day brings libraries, publishers and authors together to celebrate in UNESCO’s words “the power of books.” Each year since 2001 a city has been chosen as A World Book Capital, this year it was the turn Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The city is using the event to begin a project showing how books can influence socio-economic changes, focusing on literacy, education and the eradication of poverty.

The UNESCO Director General, Audrey Azoulay said that “Books in all their forms, allow us to learn and keep ourselves informed. They also entertain us and help us to understand the world.”

Multilingualism is a key component in literacy worldwide and UNESCO use World Book and Copyright Day as a platform to advocate for multilingual educational resources, just as they did on Mother Language Day back in February. Here in Spain there are book sharing events and much more to take part in all over the country, visit your Town Hall’s social media to find out what they have planned.
