Al menos 32 personas han muerto y más de 60 han resultado heridas este miércoles en Tailandia, después de que una grúa de construcción se desplomara sobre un tren de pasajeros y provocara su descarrilamiento, según el último balance oficial. El siniestro ocurrió por la mañana en el distrito de Sikhio, en la provincia de Nakhon Ratchasima, a unos 230 kilómetros al noreste de Bangkok. Los equipos de rescate han contado a la agencia Efe que aún podría haber varias personas “atrapadas en los vagones”.

La grúa “se desplomó sobre el tren, provocando un descarrilamiento y un incendio en el lugar”, informaron en un primer momento las autoridades regionales. Las imágenes difundidas por el Ministerio de Transportes de Tailandia muestran varios vagones volcados junto a una zona de matorrales, así como a los bomberos trabajando para sofocar las llamas mientras una densa columna de humo se eleva sobre las vías.

La máquina que ha caído sobre el tren operaba en las obras de un ambicioso corredor ferroviario de alta velocidad que conectará Tailandia con China a través de Laos. La línea en construcción discurre sobre una plataforma elevada levantada por encima de la vía ferroviaria convencional. Una parte de la grúa desplomada permanece aún sostenida por los pilares de hormigón levantados para la nueva plataforma.

La Asociación de Ingenieros Estructurales de Tailandia ha atribuido el accidente a “deficiencias en las medidas de seguridad en construcciones en áreas públicas”, según declaraciones de su presidente, Amorn Pimanamas, recogidas por la cadena pública Thai PBS. Pimanamas ha expresado, no obstante, que “la causa exacta del colapso no se puede determinar” de momento y ha evitado proporcionar más detalles sobre las hipótesis que baraja la asociación.

El ministro de Transportes, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, ha ordenado a la compañía estatal de ferrocarriles tailandesa la apertura de “una investigación exhaustiva” para esclarecer las causas del accidente. El proyecto de la nueva línea ferroviaria se está ejecutando bajo la dirección de la State Railway of Thailand en cooperación con entidades e instituciones vinculadas a Tailandia y China.

En el momento del accidente había 171 pasajeros a bordo del convoy, según las últimas cifras oficiales. Al comienzo de la ruta viajaban 208 personas, que fueron bajando en distintas paradas antes del siniestro.

El tren cubría la ruta entre la capital tailandesa y la provincia de Ubon Ratchatani, una de las conexiones más utilizadas del noreste del país. La policía ha precisado que la mayoría de las víctimas mortales viajaban en dos de los tres vagones alcanzados por la grúa.

Mitr Intrpanya, un residente de la zona de 54 años citado por la agencia AFP, describió “un ruido muy fuerte” y “dos explosiones”. “Escuché como si algo se precipitara desde arriba”, relató. “Cuando me acerqué para ver qué había ocurrido, encontré la grúa caída sobre un tren de pasajeros. El metal de la grúa parecía haber golpeado el centro del segundo coche, y lo había partido en dos”, contó.

La portavoz del Ministerio de Exteriores de China, Mao Ning, ha afirmado en una rueda de prensa rutinaria que Pekín concede gran importancia a la seguridad de los proyectos en los que está involucrada y que está analizando la situación. “Por el momento, parece que el tramo afectado estaba siendo construido por una empresa tailandesa. Las causas del accidente siguen bajo investigación”, ha señalado.

El Gobierno tailandés indicó el año pasado que más de un tercio de las obras del tramo que une Bangkok con Nahkon Ratchasima ya estaban terminados y que la línea completa, hasta Nong Khai, en la frontera con Laos, estaría finalizada en 2030.

Los equipos de rescate de Indonesia dieron este viernes por finalizado el operativo para encontrar a Quique, el niño valenciano de 10 años aún desaparecido tras dos semanas de búsqueda, después de que naufragara el 26 de diciembre un barco turístico en aguas del Parque Nacional de Komodo con una familia española, con tres fallecidos y dos supervivientes.

La conclusión de la misión fue anunciada por oficiales de la Agencia Nacional de Búsqueda y Rescate (BASARNAS) de Indonesia, que coordinó el amplio despliegue, durante una comparecencia en la ciudad de Labuan Bajo. Las familias pidieron mantener la búsqueda hasta hallar a todas las víctimas.

Los barcos de la misión regresaron este viernes al puerto sin encontrar al niño que queda desaparecido. “Hemos buscado en todas las áreas, tanto en el agua como en las costas, donde creemos que podría estar el cuerpo, pero, desafortunadamente, no hemos encontrado rastro”, dijo a EFE Budi Widjaja, quien asiste a la familia del desaparecido.

El menor sin localizar viajaba en el barco junto a una familia de seis miembros, de los que tres han fallecido y dos, una mujer y una niña, sobrevivieron.

Las víctimas mortales son Fernando Martín, exfutbolista y entrenador del equipo femenino B del Valencia CF; un hijo de este (Mateo); y una hija (Lía, de 12 años) de su esposa, Andrea Ortuño, quien fue rescatada tras el accidente junto a otra de sus hijas, de 7 años.

El niño que permanece desaparecido, Quique, es hijo de la superviviente y de una expareja. Martín y Ortuño habían contraído matrimonio recientemente.

Los equipos de búsqueda indicaron que harán seguimiento por si hay nuevas pistas o embarcaciones que navegan por la zona encuentran al menor.

El barco turístico KM Putri Sakinah se hundió en aguas de la isla de Padar -en el Parque Nacional de Komodo- alrededor de las 20.30 hora local del 26 de diciembre, tras lo cual se activó una búsqueda inicial con lanchas y más adelante se amplió el operativo. Cuatro tripulantes y un guía también fueron rescatados.

La última jornada del operativo llega después de que el jueves la Policía de Indonesia anunciara que investiga por un posible delito de negligencia con resultado mortal, castigado con hasta 5 años de cárcel, al capitán y al jefe de máquinas de la embarcación siniestrada.

“Los investigadores evalúan si hubo un elemento de negligencia en la operación del buque que provocó el accidente marítimo con víctimas mortales”, declaró en un comunicado el jefe de Relaciones Públicas de la Policía Regional de la provincia de Nusa Tenggara Oriental -donde se encuentra Komodo-, Henry Novika Chandra.

It was New Year’s Eve and the music was still playing when the ceiling of the ground floor of the venue caught fire. People started recording with their cell phones until someone shouted, “This place is on fire, we have to get out fast!” Then came the screams, different from those of minutes earlier and not captured by the cameras. And chaos. The fire department received the alarm at 1:30 a.m. They arrived quickly, but it was too late.

Five days have passed since that horrific scene: the devastating New Year’s Eve fire that left 40 dead and 119 injured at the Le Constellation bar in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana. This picturesque Alpine village, a popular ski destination for affluent tourists, is grappling with the aftermath of one of the country’s greatest tragedies while searching for answers and trying to identify the victims.

Swiss authorities announced on Sunday that the identification of all the bodies had been completed. Half of the victims were minors. The youngest were two 14-year-olds, and the rest were aged between 15 and 17. The Le Constellation bar was known for being frequented by many people under the age of 18. Of the victims, 22 were Swiss and the rest were foreign nationals: six Italians, eight French, one Portuguese, one Belgian, one Romanian, and one Turkish. Three held dual citizenship.

Among those already identified is a friend of Fabien M., a local resident. The deceased was the only security guard present at the establishment that night: “He was working to ensure the safety of those young people, so he went in to help them escape when the fire started. He lost his life trying to get them out,” he told this newspaper, through tears.

There are many unanswered questions about the cause of the tragedy. In official statements made in recent days, authorities have released information sparingly. What is known is that the fire started due to a flare placed inside a champagne bottle, which struck the ceiling. The ceiling was covered with a soundproofing material that is highly flammable. The incident occurred on the ground floor of the building, and the fire spread rapidly, as can be seen in videos recorded by witnesses.

When they realized the severity of the fire, they tried to escape through the most visible exit: a narrow staircase leading to the upper floor. Panic ensued. The building had an emergency exit, but people tried to leave via the stairs. The prosecutor confirmed that this exit existed, but no one has explained why it wasn’t used.

Witness statements indicate that the bar’s security was inadequate. They describe it as a cramped place. Samuel M., a 17-year-old Frenchman, explains, “The staircase leading to the first floor, which people tried to use to escape, is very narrow, barely two meters wide,” comparing it to the width of two chairs.

Samuel left the bar five minutes before the fire to accompany a friend who was drunk and feeling unwell, so they both witnessed everything from outside. Inside remained some of his lifelong friends, as he has always spent his holidays there. Some are injured and others are still missing, including the DJ who was playing that day, from whom he has not heard.

“I came back here to pray today because I believe that despite everything we have to keep going, we have to do it for them and their families,” he says calmly, sitting in a chair on the terrace of the place opposite the bar, where the flowers and lit candles that people have been leaving are accumulating.

Nestor F., a 17-year-old French student, is one of the witnesses being questioned by police to help clarify the events. His account also raises doubts about whether the bar was equipped with fire prevention measures. The fire caught him at the door. He was one of the civilians who assisted the injured and called some of their parents. He knows the layout of Le Constellation very well because he has frequented it for some time, and he recounts that he and a friend had to break one of the windows “so that people could get out.”

“The staircase leading to the upper floor is so narrow that it bottlenecked everyone. On the ground floor, the people who were in the bathrooms and the smoking room, by the time they realized what was happening, had very little chance of getting out,” the boy recounts, showing a couple of videos he recorded from outside when the fire broke out.

The police are in possession of these, and they are one of the pieces of evidence that will be used in the investigation. The criminal case opened against the two owners of the bar will help resolve some questions: whether there were fire extinguishers available and why the evacuation route wasn’t used in time. It will also determine whether the flammable material covering the ceiling, which caused the disaster, complied with regulations.

It has not been revealed how many people were inside the venue, which has a capacity of 300, nor how many were on the ground floor, where most were trapped when the fire occurred.

The bar’s owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, a French couple who have lived in this ski resort for some time, are accused of “negligent homicide and negligent arson.” They opened Le Constellation in 2015 after months of renovations. On the bar’s Facebook page, they documented the progress of the work with photos, clearly showing, for example, the installation of the ceiling covering. They own two other establishments in the area. There is silence when young people who frequented the bar or owners of other bars in the area are asked about them: no one knew them, or they know little more than what the press has reported.

A national day of mourning will be observed across the country on January 9, but a large memorial service was held on Sunday at the church in Crans-Montana to honor the victims. The chapel was packed, so loudspeakers were set up outside so that the more than 1,000 people present could follow along. Afterward, everyone marched in silence to gather in front of the destroyed bar. One of the town’s priests spoke a few words, his voice breaking. Rescue teams, police officers, and firefighters who had been on duty that night were present, as well as many young men, some with bandages or using crutches, weeping and embracing their families.
