Man, 90, arrested on suspicion of murdering his 86-year-old wife in northern Spain

Published

on

A 90-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 86-year-old wife at their home in northern Spain on Wednesday morning.

The Guardia Civil detained the pensioner in Pola de Laviana, Asturias, after receiving an alert from the couple’s carer at 6.10am.

The woman had rushed to their house after the elderly man telephoned her saying he was going to kill his wife.

When the carer arrived at the property, she discovered the woman’s body in bed showing clear signs of violence.

The husband was found covered in blood and had apparently attempted to take his own life following the attack.

Several patrols immediately responded to the scene, where officers could only confirm the woman’s death before arresting the suspected perpetrator.

The man was subsequently taken to Valle del Nalón Hospital for treatment.

According to police sources, the victim was not registered on Spain’s VioGén domestic violence monitoring system and there were no previous reports of abuse – a pattern seen in the majority of such cases.

Women often fail to alert authorities due to fear for themselves or their children, particularly when minors are involved, or concerns they will not be believed.

The tragic incident marks the ninth femicide in Spain during June alone, occurring just one week after the country’s first cluster killing of 2025.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, the bodies of five women murdered by their partners or ex-partners were discovered within 48 hours.

So far this year, 21 women have been killed by current or former partners across Spain. Since official statistics began in 2003, a total of 1,315 women have lost their lives to gender-based violence, though this latest case has yet to be officially confirmed in the national tally.

The arrest highlights the persistent issue of domestic violence affecting all age groups in Spain, where such crimes continue despite extensive awareness campaigns and legal protections.

A Few Very Secret, Hidden But Gorgeous Spanish Beaches And Coves

Published

a-few-very-secret,-hidden-but-gorgeous-spanish-beaches-and-coves

Euro Weekly News has selected nine very secret, hidden but gorgeous beachs and coves in Spain | Credits: Shutterstock

Spain isn’t just sangría and sunbeds. Step away from the promenade crowds and the clatter of terrace chairs, and you’ll find something else entirely — a coastline stitched together with secrets. This is the Spain they never put on the postcards. The one locals don’t talk about. Coves that vanish at high tide. Cliffs that drop like knives into the sea. Inland beaches, hidden behind fields and fences, somehow catch the scent of saltwater air. Places where the Atlantic growls and the Med sighs, and time forgets to follow.

This is the Spain of stillness and salt. Where the wind sketches lines in the sand and the sea whispers old stories, no one’s bothered to write down. There’s no noise here. Just the crunch of your boots on dried pine needles. The weight of your backpack. And the kind of silence that feels alive. These aren’t beaches you stumble across by accident. You earn them — step by dusty step, sweat down your back, sun on your neck. And when you get there, barefoot and breathless, they’re yours. Maybe not forever. But long enough to matter.

So come light. Come curious. Whether you’re chasing the golden hush of Papagayo in Lanzarote, the surreal, landlocked tide pool of Gulpiyuri in Asturias, or the savage, aching beauty of Cofete’s 14 untamed kilometres in Fuerteventura, each place demands something from you — and gives something back. You’ll find them at the end of goat trails and forgotten staircases, down from rusted fences and past wild fig trees. They’re not easy to reach. That’s the point.

But when you get there, and the last echo of your steps disappears behind you, you’ll understand why the locals never shared these places until now.

Playa del Silencio in Cudillero

Located in Cudillero, Playa del Silencio is characterised by its wild beauty and impressive cliffs. Playa del Silencio, also known as Playa del Gavieiru, is a stunning beach located in Castañeras, in the municipality of Cudillero, Asturias. It is characterised by its shell-like shape, surrounded by cliffs that protect it from the wind and waves, creating a peaceful and quiet environment. It is a pebble beach with clear waters, ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving.

La Playa Gueirúa

Another option in Asturias, also with a spectacular natural setting. Small cove of pebbles located in Santa Marina. Gueirúa Beach is a small pebble cove that stands out above all for its stunning landscape. At its eastern end, a row of sharp stone islands juts out of the ocean, the remains of an ancient fractured quartz and slate point. This area, known as La Forcada, separates Gueirúa from Calabón Beach. This is virgin territory, with few visitors and no services, although it’s not particularly difficult to access. You reach it via a path first, followed by some stairs, and it is located in the town of Santa Marina. Extreme caution is recommended when swimming. Pebble-resistant footwear is recommended for accessing and walking on the beach.

Playa Gulpiyuri

Gulpiyuri Beach is a unique beach in the world, located in Llanes, Asturias. It is an inland beach, formed by a marine sinkhole where the sea penetrates through underground galleries, creating a small sandy beach surrounded by meadows. At high tide, it fills with water and resembles a natural pool, while at low tide, the sand is exposed.

Hidden in the green heart of Asturias, a rare and magical gem emerges: Gulpiyuri Beach, a beach with no sea in sight. Barely 40 meters in diameter, embraced by cliffs and meadows, this haven of white sand vibrates with the salty whisper of the Cantabrian Sea, which reaches us underground, mysterious and pure. Born from the collapse of a sea cave, Gulpiyuri is a geological whim, a natural miracle sculpted by time. Declared a Natural Monument and protected for its unparalleled beauty, this enchanted corner seems like something out of a dream. Here, the sea is hidden… but it can be felt in every grain of sand.

Playa Cofete en Fuerteventura

In the heart of Jandía Natural Park, Fuerteventura, Cofete Beach unfolds like an untamed 14-kilometre canvas of golden sand, embraced by volcanic mountains and the roar of the Atlantic. This pristine spot, where the wind dances with the waves, is a haven for adventurous souls seeking relaxation and breathtaking landscapes. Access, a challenging stretch of dirt roads, promises a reward: sublime solitude and pure nature.

Walk along its endless shore, capture the magic in photos, or let yourself be mesmerised by the flight of birds. For the brave, surfing or kitesurfing challenges the currents. But beware: the sea is as beautiful as it is untamed. Plan your trip, respect this paradise, and discover Cofete, where land and ocean write endless poetry.

The beaches in Papagayo, located in Lanzarote, include Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo, Playa de la Cera, Caleta del Congrio, and the most famous, Playa de Papagayo. These beaches are renowned for their pristine white sand and tranquil waters, and are part of the Los Ajaches Natural Park. A collection of coves with crystal-clear waters and golden sand, perfect for enjoying the sea in a natural setting.

Cala Sa Conca in Girona

A protected and uncrowded cove on the Costa Brava. Discover a hidden paradise among golden dunes and Mediterranean breezes: Platja de la Conca, Malgrat de Mar’s best-kept secret. With its 1,700 meters of natural expanse, this semi-wild gem is a whisper of tranquillity where the coarse sand massages your steps and the wind caresses you leisurely. Here, the sea is crystal clear, the surroundings pristine, and the connection with nature is absolute. Nudists, happy dogs, and lovers of tranquillity find their perfect spot amidst psammophilous vegetation and unpretentious beauty. If you’re looking to breathe peace, touch the sky, and forget the world… this is your place.

La Joya Beach in Granada

A quiet and easily accessible beach near Motril. Playa de La Joya is a naturist beach located outside the town centre, between Torrenueva Beach and the Sacratif Lighthouse. It is a hidden beach of incomparable beauty, surrounded by cliffs that frame a deep blue sea, rarely stirred by waves. It can be accessed via the Almería road or from the town via the coastal path that starts at the Peñón de Jolúcar Viewpoint. It is approximately 290 metres long. It is made up of fine to medium-grained sand. There are no services available.

Playa Bolonia in Cádiz

Playa Bolonia in Cadiz is a long beach with dunes and a relaxed atmosphere. It is bordered to the west by Punta Camarinal and to the east by Punta Paloma; inland, it is bordered by the Sierra de La Plata, the Sierra de la Higuera, and San Bartolomé Hill. It has a length of 3,800 metres and an average width of 70 metres. It is one of the few pristine beaches with tuna found in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. The limited human occupation of the surrounding area has fostered its conservation, as there is only a small population centre. At its eastern end, there are natural pools that can only be reached on foot.

Playa de Rodas en las Islas Cíes

Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain, although during high season it can be more crowded. Rodas beach is the largest in the Cíes Islands (Vigo), and is located on Monteagudo Island (or the northern island). The beach forms a crescent of white sand and blue and green waters that enclose the small, clear Children’s Lake, which separates the islands of Monteagudo and Faro. Pine trees reach right down to the sand at either end.  From Vigo, Bayonne, or Cangas del Morrazo, you can get to the island by boat in less than an hour. The Cíes Islands can be visited from June to September, and on weekends with favourable weather conditions. There is a daily visitor limit. In February 2007, Rodas Beach was voted the most beautiful beach in the world by The Guardian, a British newspaper. In the summer of 2017, it was voted the best beach in Spain in a survey conducted among users of the Antena 3 television channel’s website, beating the beaches of Bolonia in Cádiz and Calblanque in Cartagena.
