A quarter-to-quarter comparison showed a 49% rise on the last three months of 2024.

COATA president, Carlos Casas, told the Informacion newspaper: “The start of the year shows a remarkable intensity of activity, with figures that we have not seen since before the 2008 crisis.”

“This is a response to an economic environment that, despite the uncertainties, continues to be conducive to housing development and reflects a significant boost to the sector,” he added.

“Although such marked increases are not expected over the coming quarters, statistics indicate that the market is reacting to demand pressure by increasing the level of activity,” he continued.

Casas did issue a warning says that ‘we must be prudent and not take for granted that this rate of growth will be maintained’.

Inland areas plus Elche and Las Marinas have reached construction levels not seen for 17 years.

The most new builds continue to be recorded in the Vega Baja.

Broken down into municipalities, San Miguel de Salinas had the highest number of properties started this year at 275, followed closely by Mutxamel on 260.

Alicante follows with 258 homes, Villajoyosa on 257, Orihuela with 204, and Denia recording 200.

The average building cost per m2 stood at €559 during the first quarter of 2025, up by 2.9% on the 2024 annual figure.

Benidorm Policia Local spokesperson, Enrique Tortosa, said the patrol car helped over 30 drivers avoid a collision.

“We managed to stop the driver on the N-332 close to the San Jaime cemetery which was as safe a place as any for the manoeuvre,” Tortosa explained.

The British man, who lives in Spain, tested positive for both excess alcohol and drugs.

He was handed over to the custody of the Guardia Civil to pursue the matter further.

They have charged him with multiple crimes against road safety.

It’s the second-such incident in less than a fortnight involving an incapacitated British motorist causing mayhem in Alicante province.

On April 29, a drugged 49-year-old man led police on a high-speed chase lasting for around 10 kms.

At least 12 vehicles were damaged as the man drove on the wrong-side of various roads including the A-7 and N-340 in the Alcoy, Cocentaina and Muro areas.

Two Guardia Civil officers were also assaulted while arresting the Brit.

Love-hug thieves jailed after wave of tourist robberies in Spain

A MAN and a woman- both aged 38- have been arrested by the Guardia Civil over a wave of ‘hugging’ robberies on Costa Blanca streets.

The majority of love-hug cases sees suspects get bail, only to reoffend again.

This time, a Denia court ordered the couple to be jailed ahead of their trial.

They are accused of stealing high-end watches and jewellery worth over €140,000 from tourists and elderly people in six robberies carried out in just a month.

The robbery technique involved the woman giving a bear-hug embrace to a victim after asking for information.

She’d then snatch any valuables before running off to her friend in a waiting car.

They came unstuck in Calpe on May 1, when a Guardia Civil patrol spotted their vehicle driving around suspiciously at a very low speed.

The two occupants were seen eyeing up elderly people as potential targets.

They were pulled over and officers discovered the car had been linked to previous crimes.

The couple were also wanted in connection with a robbery committed a few weeks ago in Marbella.

As the officers proceeded to arrest them, they were told that minutes earlier in Calpe, the hugger-muggers had stolen two gold chains from a tourist.

Similar crimes were identified from April involving the duo in Javea, Pilar de la Horadada, La Nucia, and Pedreguer.
