Construction crews have started clearing land in the southern part of Motril. Heavy machinery now operates constantly in the former agricultural zone near the Parque de los Pueblos de America. First efforts are focusing on site preparation before full constructing streets begins.
New homes and commercial space planned
This long-awaited project gained formal approval in late last year through the Partial Plan for SUS MOT-8. Planners expect around 690 dwellings in total, with nearly 20 per cent designated as protected-price official housing. The council says these units will help families with limited resources, young people, and other groups facing barriers in the property market.
The development also adds 20,000 square metres of new shopping space to increase local retail options.
Hotel project moves closer to launch
Mayor Luisa Garcia Chamorro has confirmed that agreements for a new hotel have reached an advanced stage. Developers plan to present detailed proposals soon in partnership with Hoteles Luna. Early details indicate the facility will offer about 150 rooms together with a swimming pool, leisure areas, restaurants, and controlled parking.
Fireworks display requires a new location
Preparations for this summer mean organisers need to relocate the traditional Castillo Piromusical fireworks event. Recent years saw the display staged in the open area between the park and swimming pool, but current machinery presence now prevents that. Planners consider a site slightly closer to the beach to maintain the popular show.
Park expansion improves green space
Funding from the 2025 Agricultural Employment Promotion Programme is supporting enlargement of the Parque de los Pueblos de America. Work includes new green areas exceeding 5,000 square metres, extended access points from the residential sector, and further development of the Cactus and Succulents Garden. Additional tree and shrub planting will follow American botanical themes to match the park setting.
Future leisure facilities at Alcoholera site
Separate improvements at the Alcoholera leisure complex will add public spaces, restore existing buildings including the old factory, and introduce new restaurants and cinema facilities.
Mayor Garcia Chamorro describes these combined efforts as essential for creating a cohesive southern district connected to existing green lungs. Residents already value the park highly for daily walks, family visits, and community enjoyment.
