Orihuela is moving forward with a major upgrade of one of its most used public spaces after launching a tender worth nearly €485,000 to fully renovate the Ingeniero Juan García park.

The project, announced in early April, aims to modernise the ageing park and improve safety, accessibility and usability for residents, with works expected to take around six months once construction begins.

A long-overdue renovation

Located next to Avenida Príncipe de Asturias, the park has seen heavy use over the years and is now showing clear signs of deterioration, particularly in its children’s play areas and sports facilities. Local officials described the intervention as necessary to bring the space up to modern standards and respond to current community needs. The project forms part of a wider strategy to improve public areas across Orihuela.

What will change in the park

The renovation plans include a complete overhaul of the children’s playground, with old equipment removed and replaced by new certified play structures and safety surfaces. The sports area will also be significantly upgraded. The existing multi-use court will be expanded to 44 by 22 metres, allowing for a wider range of activities, and will include new seating, protective fencing and ball-stop netting. In addition, the project introduces several new features designed to diversify how the park is used. These include a dog park equipped with agility elements and a decorative “dry fountain” with eight water jets and an underground tank.

New spaces for all ages

Beyond sports and play areas, the park will be redesigned to serve a broader range of visitors. Plans include the installation of pergolas, benches and leisure features such as pétanque courts, ping pong tables and game areas.

Walking surfaces throughout the park will be replaced with more durable and accessible materials, including concrete paving, stabilised earth and permeable flooring, helping to improve both comfort and drainage. Lighting will also be upgraded using energy-efficient LED systems, while irrigation improvements aim to optimise water use and support the maintenance of green areas.

Fully funded project with six-month timeline

The works are fully financed by the Generalitat Valenciana, with a base budget of €484,996. The tender process was opened at the start of April, and construction is expected to take approximately six months once awarded.

What this means for residents

For residents, the upgrade represents a significant improvement to a central community space that has struggled to keep pace with demand. Once completed, the park is expected to offer a more modern, accessible and versatile environment, supporting everything from family use and sport to social gatherings. As Orihuela continues investing in public infrastructure, the renovation signals a broader push to enhance everyday urban spaces across the municipality.
