Two National Police officers in Palma prevented a tragedy on Sunday, May 18, after rescuing a young woman moments before she attempted to jump from a height in an apparent suicide attempt.
The incident unfolded in front of several bystanders, who quickly alerted emergency services after spotting the visibly distressed woman in a dangerous position. According to police sources, patrol units arrived within minutes and immediately began trying to calm the situation while securing the surrounding area.
Officers spent several minutes speaking with the woman
Witnesses said the officers approached carefully and spent several tense minutes speaking calmly with the woman in an attempt to gain her trust and stop the situation from escalating further.
Police reportedly focused on keeping her engaged in conversation while emergency medical services prepared nearby. At a critical moment, the officers managed to move closer and pull her to safety before she could jump.
Bystanders watching the incident applauded the officers after the rescue, with several witnesses later praising their composure and rapid reaction during what many described as a deeply emotional scene.
Emergency medical teams later transferred the young woman to hospital, where she received medical attention and psychological support. Authorities have not released further details about her identity or condition.
Growing concerns surrounding mental health
The rescue has once again drawn attention to mental health concerns across Spain and the increasing emotional pressures affecting many young people. Mental health organisations have repeatedly warned about rising cases of anxiety, depression and emotional crisis, particularly among younger age groups following years of economic uncertainty and social pressure.
Authorities continue to encourage anyone experiencing emotional distress or suicidal thoughts to seek immediate help through emergency services, healthcare professionals or specialised support lines.
In Spain, the national 024 suicide prevention helpline operates 24 hours a day and offers confidential support for people in crisis, as well as for relatives and friends concerned about someone’s wellbeing.
