Queen Elizabeth’s Coffin Is Lead-Lined But Not For The Reasons You Might Think

Why Queen Elizabeth’s coffin is lead-lined is a point of much speculation but there is according to scientists a simple reason that goes back many centuries.

According to experts spoken to by the Washington Post on Wednesday, September 21 this is a tradition that goes back many centuries.

According to Julie Anne Taddeo, a Research Professor of History at the University of Maryland the reason is quite practical. She said: “As a material in coffins, lead helps keep out moisture and preserve the body for longer and prevent smells and toxins from a dead body escaping.

“Her coffin was on display for many days and made a long journey to its final resting place.”

Although modern technology enables better preservation of the corpse, the tradition is still maintained along with the rest of the ceremonial activities.

Mike Parker Pearson, a Professor at University College London’s Institute of Archaeology says the use of lead is a long tradition. For example, the embalmed corpse of King Edward I, who died in 1307, was “found in 1774 to be well preserved in his marble sarcophagus” in Westminster Abbey.

He said that it is thought that the practice of using lead was probably adopted around the time of Edward’s death, although it could have come later.

He continued saying that earlier kings were not embalmed. William the Conqueror, who died in 1087, was apparently so badly decayed that his bloated abdomen exploded. Priests had tried to stuff his body into “a stone coffin that proved too small for his bulk.”

“Mourners supposedly ran for the door to escape the putrid stench.”

An account at the time by according to Orderic Vitalis, a Benedictine monk said William’s “swollen bowels burst, and an intolerable stench assailed the nostrils of the by-standers and the whole crow.,”

With the coffin lead-lined, many commentators and spectators noted that it was a heavy weight for the pallbearers to carry. Unlike the use of lead, carrying the coffin is a more recent alteration to the funeral of kings and queens.

The change came after the horses pulling Queen Victoria’s catafalque bolted having been spooked by something nearby. That nearly led to her coffin being spilt into the street, resulting in the change to the manner in which the coffin is moved.

Pall bearing has also had its moments with Winston Churchill’s lead-lined coffin almost dropped after it nearly slipped off shoulders off some of the shoulders of the men carrying it. They paused to take a breather and nearly dropped the coffin in the process.

At the time the pallbearers at the back, the pushers, saved the day by managing to stop it from falling. In an interview with the BBC, Lincoln Perkins said he uttered aloud to the corpse: “Don’t worry, sir, we’ll look after you.”

Ancient Egyptians are said to have used similar techniques to preserve their high-ranking officials. However, they were buried with all their worldly possessions whereas the Queen is said to have been buried with just her wedding ring of Welsh Gold and a pair of pearl earrings.

So there you have it, the reason why Queen Elizabeth’s coffin is lead lined although it no doubt serves other purposes like preventing the use of scanners and the like to view what is in the coffin.

Elated Metal Detectorist Sells Unearthed Portuguese Gold Coin For £16,000

A metal detectorist who unearthed an old gold coin was over the moon when it sold for £16,000 at an auction in London.

A very happy metal detectorist was celebrating yesterday, Friday, September 30, after an old gold coin he unearthed on a muddy field sold for £16,000 ( approx €18,220). It was initially expected to go for around £30,000 ( approx €34,170) at Noonan’s auction house in London.

Mick Edwards was enjoying a trip away on his 35th wedding anniversary when he decided to take a morning stroll with his metal detector around the fields of the farm they were staying at in Etchilhampton, near the town of Devizes in Wiltshire.

The 62-year-old civil servant from Peterlee, County Durham, explained: “I was staying on the farm near Etchilhampton with my wife after celebrating 35 years of marriage from the day before. I had only found some broken crotal bells, so I walked to the top of the field for a final effort before breakfast, taking just three more steps I received a clear signal which sounded like a large copper coin”.

“I was dumbstruck and just sat looking at the coin unable even to breathe”, he continued. “I could see the cross on the coin and thought it was probably Spanish but later found out it was Portuguese from the Kings name Manuel”. Mick has already agreed to split the proceeds with the Wiltshire landowner.

Mick’s discovery dates to between 1495 and 1521 and is believed to be the first of its kind ever dug up in Britain. A Latin inscription on the gold coin translates as: ‘In this sign shall we conquer’. It weighs around 30 grams and has a diameter of 36mm. The Portuguese coin was buried in about 10 inches of mud when Mick located it.

Nigel Mills, an expert from Noonan’s pointed out:  “In England, at this time, the largest gold coin was a Sovereign which weighed 15.3 grams so this coin is more than double that in weight, so would have had a value greater than two pounds”. The coin is thought to have been part of Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama’s loot from Africa, as reported by metro.co.uk.

Charles LeClerc Clinches Singapore Grand Prix Pole Position For Ferrari

Ferrari driver Charles LeClerc has clinched pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc will start from pole position in the Singapore Grand Prix tomorrow, Sunday, October 2. He drove his Ferrari to a stunning fastest lap around the Marina Bay street circuit this evening, Saturday 1. It is his second consecutive pole and the ninth of the season.

“It was really, really special. Every qualifying in street tracks is super on the limit and even more like that when it is damp. But it worked well”, said the Frenchman after the session.

Red Bull’s reigning world champion Max Verstappen looked to be heading for that front-row spot, but a disaster over his car’s fuel supply resulted in the Dutchman finishing in eighth place. On the penultimate lap of today’s Q3 session, he received a message via the team radio instructing him to pit urgently. “I don’t get it. What are you saying?”, Verstappen was heard saying.

He was on-course for an unbelievable lap 😱

FIA rules state that cars must have a specific amount of fuel remaining after completing the session in order to provide a sample. The cars run with as little fuel as possible allowing them to carry less weight to achieve faster lap times. Verstappen claimed he was unaware of his fuel situation and thought he could steal pole in that final qualifying lap.

“Not enough fuel in the car”, commented Verstappen after the session. “We got a little surprised we had that extra lap but you can track that, you see that coming. That’s why I don’t really understand how that was missed. In hindsight, I should have finished the lap before when they told me to abort to make a gap for the last lap”.

“All this was triggered by Pierre (Gasly) in front of me, which is why I had to create a gap for that final lap, because I was getting close to him. But that’s not an excuse. I cannot see how much fuel is in the car and we have all the sensors in the world to track these things. So, yeah, incredibly frustrating”, he concluded.

The fact that he starts from eighth position on the grid would seem irrelevant when you consider his recent results when starting from lower down the pack. Singapore’s street circuit though is a very different proposition. “It’s a bit like Monaco – you cannot really pass. I don’t really see a podium or a win”, he emphasised.

Should Verstappen win tomorrow’s race, and other results go in his favour, then he will be crowned world champion for the second consecutive year.

Sergio Perez placed the other Red Bull second on the grid alongside LeClerc, pipping Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes by just by 0.022 seconds. Carlos Sainz guided the other Ferraro to fourth, with Fernando Alonso’s Alpine in fifth, as reported by bbc.com.

Unrest in Pakistan after authorities issue arrest warrant for former PM Imran Khan

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan.

According to reports coming out of Pakistan today, Saturday, October 1, the authorities have issued an arrest warrant for the country’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan. A magistrate in the city of Islamabad is believed to be the one who signed the warrant.

The Pakistani cricketing legend was ousted from power earlier this year in what was perceived to have been a coup. Khan still has a huge following in the country and this latest action could once again incense his loyal supporters.

Khan formed the Pakistan Movement for Justice political party (PTI) back in 1996 and ran the country as the party’s head from 2018 to 2022. Members of the PTI party have already taken to social media to warn the present government that they are making a huge mistake that will only cause further unrest.

Muhammad Khalid Khurshid Khan, the PTI Chief Minister of the Gilgit Baltistan region, warned the government that Imran Khan is their ‘red line’. He also announced that Provincial President PTIGB Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid had condemned in the strongest terms the process of issuing the arrest warrant of Chairman Imran Khan.

Khalid Khurshid said that Chairman Imran Khan condemned the issuance of an arrest warrant in the strongest terms. He insisted that it was one of the worst undemocratic and fascist practices of the ‘imported federal government’.
