Spain is about to see a sudden and striking rise in temperatures, with some areas expected to warm by as much as 15°C in just a few hours. From this Thursday, April 9, a mass of warm air moving in from the south will push temperatures well above normal for this time of year, bringing conditions more typical of late spring.
According to forecasts, the change will be felt across much of the country, especially in the centre, west and south, where the increase will be fastest and most noticeable. In contrast, northern areas near the Cantabrian coast will see much smaller changes.
Where temperatures will rise the most across Spain
The biggest increases are expected in inland regions, particularly in Extremadura, Castilla La Mancha and parts of Andalucía. In provinces such as Cáceres, Badajoz, Ciudad Real, Jaén and Granada, temperatures could rise by more than 10°C, with some areas approaching a 15°C jump within a short period.
Cities across the interior are set to feel the shift quickly. Madrid is expected to reach around 26°C, while areas in the Ebro valley, including Zaragoza, could come close to 29°C.
These figures are well above what would normally be expected at this time of year, giving parts of Spain a brief taste of late spring conditions.
The sharp contrast with the north will also stand out. Along the Cantabrian coast, temperatures may remain stable or even dip slightly, highlighting just how uneven this weather pattern will be.
Calima and unstable weather accompany the heat
The warm air arriving from the south is not coming alone. It is also carrying dust in suspension, which is likely to lead to episodes of calima moving from south to north across the peninsula.
This can affect visibility and leave a thin layer of dust on surfaces, especially if it combines with light rain. Muddy rain is possible in some areas where these two elements meet.
At the same time, the weather will not be completely settled everywhere. Some regions are expected to see wind, waves or even storms alongside the rise in temperatures.
Warnings have been issued in parts of Andalucía, Galicia and the Canary Islands for strong winds and rough seas. In Castilla y León, rain and thunderstorms are forecast, with the possibility of locally intense downpours and even hail, particularly south of the Cantabrian range.
What is behind this sudden temperature spike
The shift is linked to a weather system forming to the north of Morocco. This system is helping to draw warm air up from the south and push it across the Iberian Peninsula.
As the warm air moves in, temperatures respond quickly, especially in inland areas where conditions can change more rapidly than along the coast.
Weather experts describe the rise as unusual because of how quickly it is expected to happen. Rather than a gradual warming over several days, the increase is likely to take place within hours in some locations.
A brief but noticeable taste of late spring
While the episode is expected to be short lived, it will still be enough to make a clear impression.
For many people, it will feel like a sudden jump from early spring into much warmer conditions. Outdoor plans, clothing choices and even daily routines may need adjusting as temperatures climb quickly.
At the same time, the mix of heat, dust in the air and possible storms means the weather will remain changeable rather than fully settled.
For now, the key takeaway is simple. A sharp rise in temperatures is on the way, and in some parts of Spain, it will happen faster than many expect.
