VALENCIA City Council have asked their counterparts in Torrent to speed up the creation of the joint animal shelter – which is set to be shared by both municipalities.

Councillor for Animal Welfare of València City Council, Glòria Tello, has asked her counterpart in Torrent City Council, Andrés Campos, to speed up the creation of the joint animal shelter that both municipalities are planning to set up on land in the capital of L’Horta Sud.

According to Levante-EMV, València appointed members of the project’s monitoring committee over a year ago and even approved the amount of €12,000 for the feasibility plan, however, a year later and despite signing an agreement, Torrent City Council has still not appointed the members of the commission.

At the meeting held on Friday, May 13, Andrés Campos reacted to Tello’s urgent appeal to appoint the members of the committee and said the council would do it “as soon as possible”.

The joint plan of Valencia and Torrent’s city councils will see a large municipal shelter built on a 17,000 square metre plot of land in Mas de Don Pedro, which is nine times larger than the current facilities in Benimàmet, Valencia.

The agreement between the two municipalities was signed in April 2021 and the idea was to create a commission to draw up the statutes and promote the feasibility study.

Any town council in the metropolitan area can join the project, according to local reports. However, for the time being, the city of Valencia and Torrent will both lead the project.

Earlier this year, Torrent, which has around 83,962 inhabitants, was the scene of a brutal murder.

A 58-year-old horse breeder was arrested after being accused of beating an employee to death for breaking a tap.

UK Fish And Chips Shops Facing Closure Due To Ukraine Crisis

Fish and chip shop industry leaders are demanding a “long-term strategy” from the Government of the UK to help solve the food crisis they are facing due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

The UK’s National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) have expressed deep concerns as the main four ingredients used for a traditional fish and chip meal are currently affected by the Russia Ukraine war ending a third of the nation’s Fish and Chip shops to close, as reported by SkyNews.

Ukraine supplies most of the UK’s sunflower oil with the NFFF stating that 50 per cent of oil used by British fish and chip shops comes from Ukraine, with oil alternatives skyrocketing in price.

To make matters worse an estimated 40 per cent of cod and haddock is supplied to the UK by Russia, with current sanctions on Russia making supplies from the North Sea far much more expensive

George Morey, 29, who runs Knights, a fish and chip shop in Glastonbury, believed to be one of the oldest family-run fish and chips shops in the UK stated:

“Will there be enough (fish) if we refuse to buy Russian white fish? It’s a real big concern.”

“Will we have to consider finding another product for the menu to replace fish and chips – could the impact be that extreme? I think if prices keep increasing, it may be a thing we keep in mind.”

George added: “We have to prepare ourselves for the worst times ahead, and I think it’s possibly the biggest challenge the fish and chip industry has faced, ever.”
