Dining out on the Costas

This hidden Mallorca BBQ spot is a game-changer for families

Published

on

El Patio Mallorca has quietly become one of those rare finds you almost don’t want to share: the kind of place that instantly earns “hidden gem” status the moment you visit. But for families in particular, it’s too good not to talk about.

We first decided to try it on a whim, drawn in by the promise of a relaxed BBQ-style dining experience. What we discovered was something far better: a thoughtfully designed, family-friendly space where good food and easy, stress-free dining come together effortlessly.

A playground to entertain kids

The standout feature – and the reason it’s now firmly on our recommendation list-— is the layout. Imagine sitting down to enjoy your meal while your children play happily just a few steps away in a safe, well-equipped playground.

It completely changes the dining experience. Instead of the usual rushed meal or constant interruptions, you can actually sit back, have a conversation, and enjoy your food while the kids are entertained.

The setting itself adds to the magic. The restaurant has a lush, secret-garden vibe, with greenery woven throughout the space that makes it feel both relaxed and slightly escapist. It’s informal without feeling basic, stylish without being pretentious – exactly the kind of atmosphere you want for a long, leisurely lunch or early evening dinner.

The DIY BBQ tables that turn lunch into an experience

Then there’s the food – or more specifically, the way you experience it.

One of the biggest highlights is the DIY grill tables. We booked one of these for €30 per person, and it turned out to be the most fun part of the entire visit. The concept is simple but brilliant: platters of meats, vegetables, and sides are brought to your table, and you grill everything yourself right there.

It’s interactive, a little bit different, and adds a social, almost celebratory feel to the meal.

There’s something undeniably enjoyable about cooking your own food at the table — especially when you can go at your own pace and order as many platters as you like. It turns dining into an experience rather than just a meal. Whether you’re with friends or family, it creates those moments where everyone is involved, chatting, cooking, and sharing.

And importantly, it doesn’t feel like a gimmick. The quality of the ingredients is solid, and the variety ensures there’s something for everyone — from classic BBQ meats to lighter options.

Surprisingly affordable

Another pleasant surprise is the pricing. Mallorca isn’t always known for being budget-friendly, especially when it comes to dining out, but El Patio manages to strike a balance between quality and affordability.

The €30 grill option feels particularly good value considering the quantity and the experience itself. Beyond that, the menu includes a range of deals and reasonably priced options, making it accessible for regular visits rather than just special occasions.

And that’s really the key point – this is a place you’ll want to return to.

It’s not just about the food, although that’s certainly enjoyable. It’s about how easy the whole experience feels. There’s no stress about keeping children entertained, no pressure to rush through your meal, and no sense that you’re out of place if things get a little noisy or relaxed. It’s designed with real life in mind.

For parents, that’s invaluable.

It also works just as well for casual group gatherings. The grill tables naturally encourage interaction, making it ideal for birthdays, relaxed celebrations, or even just a long lunch with friends. Add in the garden setting and the hum of a family-friendly atmosphere, and you’ve got something that feels both lively and comfortable at the same time.

Service-wise, the team keeps things moving smoothly without being intrusive, adding to the overall relaxed feel.

In a destination like Mallorca, where there’s no shortage of beautiful restaurants and polished dining spots, El Patio Mallorca stands out for a completely different reason. It’s not trying to be overly refined or exclusive: instead, it delivers something far more valuable: a genuinely enjoyable, easygoing experience that works for everyone at the table.

If you’re visiting with children, it’s an absolute must. And even if you’re not, the grill tables alone make it worth checking out.

It’s the kind of place you discover once, then find yourself recommending to everyone – quietly, of course, because part of you still wants to keep it as your own little secret.

Traditional Tapas At Tapeo El Rosario

Published

on

traditional-tapas-at-tapeo-el-rosario

In the quiet area of El Rosario opposite the Royal Tennis club is Tapeo El Rosario. Taking over one corner of the central commercial centre, a restaurant that delivers exactly what you expect, something that many places promise but few truly achieve. This eatery is honest, traditional and serves highly satisfying food in relaxed surroundings.

The atmosphere is a comfortable balance between lively and chilled. The space is informal and welcoming, with 4 different areas to dine. First as you enter the restaurant there is an area with barrels as tables and high stools for more of a drinks and grazing style evening. The inside area near the bar, where a TV is playing local sports and music videos, and a terrace outside, currently covered and using heaters but will open up during the warmer months to let the sunshine in. Then finally a few tables out on the street for real alfresco dining.

The decor is not styled which is part of the appeal. Brown and green tones you would expect and Spanish photos, artwork and accessories to feel like a proper neighbourhood spot, the kind where the focus is firmly on the food and the chat rather than the surroundings.

The menu is classic and authentic, knowing what the diners want

The selection on offer hasn’t changed for years, showing that it knows what people want. It’s classic Spanish tapas, fish dishes and rich meat mains, with a strong emphasis on traditional, home-style cooking.

The menu was approached by ordering lots of smaller dishes to enable us to have as big a selection as our waistbands would allow.

Starting off, the calamares were crisp and hot, while the tomato and anchovy salad offered a fresh and salty lighter dish. This salad is not one for the garlic haters as it truly packs a punch. The mushrooms with garlic sauce and ham was a combination many hadn’t tried before but after consuming it is safe to say it will be ordered again.

The gambas pil pil arrived sizzling, packed with garlic and chilli, served with bread to soak up the flavoured oil.

The pork cheeks in red wine were a favourite, slow-cooked and falling apart over small cubed potatoes. Rich and deeply intense. Not only a favorite of ours but also those online, many referring to the dish as a highlight of their meal.

Finally,  the rabo de toro and the evening special of slow cooked lamb leg more than delivered in flavour.  Both rich and served with vegetables and potatoes, the meat extremely tender coming away from the bone, just as you would hope.

The trio behind Tapeo all have long careers and vast experience in hospitality

The service was friendly and at a good pace. Dishes cleared away as soon as finished to make room for the next round. Younger guests were joked with and made to feel very welcome.

The prices at Tapeo El Rosario are good value for money. Tapas ranging from €2.70 for the smaller plates and up to €15 for the larger portions and with the meat mains varying as expected depending on which cut and type you prefer, averaging at €20 for a plate big enough for 2. With the drinks included, the table could order generously without the bill spiralling out of control.

Behind Tapeo El Rosario is a trio of owners. Co-owner Sergio Linan began his career in hospitality in 2013, learning the trade in his uncle’s restaurant, while Antonio Pacheco, originally from Cordoba, built years of experience working across Marbella before deciding to launch his own venture. Completing the team is Javier, a Marbella native who grew up helping in his family’s restaurants and returned to the industry after exploring other paths.

Tapeo El Rosario isn’t trying to compete with Marbella’s high-end dining scene and it doesn’t need to. What it offers is reliable, flavour-packed Spanish food, generous portions, and a relaxed vibe that works. People agree with a 4.4/5 rating on Google. It is traditional Spanish cooking, with rich sauces, slow-cooked meats, and tapas designed to be shared happily and enthusiastically around the table.

With the added bonus of parking easy to find around the restaurant it is well worth a visit for some no frills food and a very enjoyable experience.

Tapeo El Rosario is located at Urb. el Rosario, Parcela g. Call +34689253605 for booking or visit their website

Most Addictive Argentinian Food On The Island

Published

on

most-addictive-argentinian-food-on-the-island

Bodegón Nigro is the kind of place you almost walk past… until the buzz spilling out onto the pavement stops you in your tracks. Small, packed and unapologetically lively, this Argentinian-run restaurant has quietly built a cult following since opening in 2024, thanks to one simple promise: honest food, done exceptionally well.

This isn’t a polished fine-dining concept or a glossy Mallorca hotspot. Instead, it’s something far more compelling – a true neighbourhood bodegón, where tables are close, portions are generous and the atmosphere feels like stepping into someone’s home kitchen.

From the moment you sit down, there’s a sense of warmth that goes beyond the décor. Service is relaxed but attentive, and there’s a genuine pride in explaining dishes: especially if you’re new to Argentinian cuisine.

The menu: Big, bold and unapologetically indulgent

At the heart of Bodegón Nigro is a menu that leans heavily into Argentinian comfort classics: rich, nostalgic and designed for sharing (or attempting to).

You’ll want to begin with the empanadas, which are widely considered a must-order here. Expect golden, crisp pastry with deeply flavourful fillings, particularly the traditional carne cortada a cuchillo and Salteña styles.

Then there’s provoleta, that iconic slab of melted provolone cheese, bubbling and smoky, often topped with herbs or chimichurri. It’s simple, indulgent and dangerously moreish.

Other starters like mollejas (sweetbreads) and matambre add a more traditional, slightly adventurous edge to the menu, perfect if you’re looking to explore beyond the usual.

Mains worth planning your entire evening around

If starters set the tone, mains at Bodegón Nigro are where things get serious.

The standout? Without question, the milanesas. These aren’t just schnitzels, they’re full-blown events. The famous Milanesa Ratona layers crispy beef with tomato sauce, melted cheeses, bacon, fried eggs and herbs, creating a towering, indulgent dish that comfortably feeds two (or even three).

It’s rich, excessive and completely irresistible and the kind of plate you’ll still be thinking about days later.

Elsewhere on the menu, you’ll find dishes like vacío a la cerveza (beer-braised flank steak) and handmade pastas, including ravioli filled with slow-cooked meats and paired with Malbec-based sauces.

Everything leans into depth of flavour and comfort rather than refinement—this is food designed to satisfy, not impress with theatrics.

A viral-worthy spot with a 4.9 rating (yet still feels like a hidden gem)

Despite its low-key appearance, Bodegón Nigro has quickly become one of Palma’s most talked-about casual dining spots. With near-perfect ratings and consistent praise for both food and service, it’s clear the formula works: authentic recipes, generous portions and a welcoming, unpretentious vibe.

Regulars rave about the empanadas and milanesas, while newcomers are often surprised by just how comforting and nostalgic the experience feels, even if they’ve never tried Argentinian food before.

Save room: The dessert situation is serious

Desserts here are entirely homemade and worth the extra stretch.

The banoffee pie is a standout: creamy, balanced and indulgent without being overly sweet.
Other options like chocotorta, tiramisu, and the traditional vigilante (cheese with dulce de batata) keep things firmly rooted in Argentinian tradition.

It’s the kind of dessert menu that makes sharing difficult.

The vibe: Lively, loud and always full

Bodegón Nigro is not the place for a quiet, lingering dinner. The space is compact, tables turn quickly, and reservations are strongly recommended, especially on weekends.

But that’s part of the charm. The buzz, the noise, the closeness…it all adds to the feeling that you’ve stumbled onto something authentic. Expect a packed dining room, fast-paced service and a genuinely social atmosphere. But above all, expect to leave full.

One of Palma’s most satisfying comfort food spots

Bodegón Nigro doesn’t try to be trendy and that’s exactly why it works.

With its deeply flavourful dishes, generous portions and welcoming energy, it captures something that’s increasingly rare: a restaurant that feels both personal and memorable without needing to overcomplicate things.

If you’re in Palma and craving something hearty, nostalgic and full of character, this is one reservation worth making.

Come hungry, bring friends… and don’t skip the milanesa!
