It’s the end of an era in Munich. Thomas Müller, the face of FC Bayern for a quarter of a century, is leaving the club this summer.
The news broke in a joint statement from the player and the club, confirming that Müller’s contract won’t be renewed. For fans, teammates and the man himself, it’s a tough pill to swallow.
“This isn’t how I imagined it would end,” the 35-year-old wrote on Instagram, admitting the decision wasn’t his own. Still, he says he respects it – even if it hurts.
25 years at Bayern: Thomas Müller’s life in red and white
Müller’s story with Bayern began way back in 2000, when a ten-year-old from Pähl in Upper Bavaria walked through the doors of the club’s youth academy. Fast forward 25 years, and he’s leaving as one of Bayern’s most iconic figures.
Twelve Bundesliga titles. Two Champions League trophies. A total of 33 major honours, all in the same shirt. No other player in the club’s history has won more.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” Müller said, reflecting on the ride. “Shaped by unforgettable moments, amazing people and memories I’ll carry forever.”
Club president Herbert Hainer called him “the definition of a Bavarian fairytale.” And really, he’s not wrong. From local lad to club legend – few players ever live that dream the way Müller has.
Thomas Müller’s final mission: One last trophy with Bayern
With the finish line in sight, Müller isn’t done yet. He’s got one thing left on his mind: going out on a high.
“What I want now is clear – more titles, more moments to celebrate with our fans,” he said. “Let’s bring that championship home, and reach the final Dahoam together.”
His final game in red is expected to come this summer at the FIFA Club World Cup in the US – a fitting global stage for his goodbye. What comes next? No one’s sure. There’s talk of a move to America, but for now, Müller’s focus is firmly on the present.
One thing is certain though: when he walks off the pitch for the last time in Bayern colours, it’ll be the end of something special.
