Tragedy in Catalunya as toddler dies after father goes to work and ‘forgets son was in the car’

Published

A TWO-year-old child has died after being left inside a car for five hours during Spain’s heatwave in Catalunya.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, regional police force, are investigating the death as a case of negligence after the father reportedly forgot his son was in the car when he went to work on Monday morning in Valls, Tarragona province.

Emergency services received a call just after 3pm reporting that a young child was unresponsive inside a car parked in an industrial area.

When police arrived, the father had already removed the toddler from the vehicle and taken him to an air-conditioned building in a desperate attempt to save his life.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the child but were unable to revive him. The youngster was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to initial police reports, the father left for work at around 10am without realising his two-year-old son was still in the car.

The tragic oversight occurred as temperatures across Catalonia soared during the ongoing heatwave gripping much of Spain.

Witnesses first spotted the distressed child inside the vehicle at around 2pm and raised the alarm.

The father was immediately contacted and rushed to get his son from the sweltering car before taking him to an air-conditioned industrial unit where he works.

Fire services, police and medical teams all responded to the emergency call, but it was too late to save the toddler’s life.

The father, who has not been named, received psychological support at the scene and remains in a state of shock. Police sources said investigators have been unable to question him due to his traumatised condition.

SEVERAL Spanish tourist hotspots battled severe floods and thunderstorms over the weekend, with roads turning into rivers.

The military deployed a disaster relief unit to the northeastern city of Zaragoza after intense storms caused flooding across the province.

They worked to drain the excess water and install roadblocks to prevent further flooding.

In Barcelona, a hospital was forced to close because of flooding caused by heavy rain lashing the Catalonian capital on Saturday.

Two people were reported missing from the town of Cubelles, with a witness claiming to see a woman and child fall into the Foix River and being swept away in the floodwaters.

Rescue workers are continuing the search.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in Cubelles,” Cubelles town mayor Rosa Montserrat Fonoll told Catalan News. The flow of water reached 7,070 cubic feet per second through the town.

At the peak of the storm, emergency services received 1,200 calls in the town. Some residents remain without electricity or running water.

Spanish weather agency AEMET had warned that there was high potential for flash floods in eight provinces Barcelona, Teruel and Zaragoza, Huesca, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona, and Castellón.

The agency recorded nearly 3,200 lightning strikes in Barcelona on Saturday alone, with the Tibidabo amusement park and Park Güell closed. There was also a swimming ban on public beaches.

The storm was caused by a weather phenomenon known as Dana, which is an isolated depression at high levels, caused by a mass of cold air colliding with a mass of warm air over the Mediterranean sea.

A FIREFIGHTER has died as emergency services continue to battle a wildfire in southern Catalunya equivalent to the size of over 4,500 football pitches.

Antonio Serrano, a 46-year-old member of the Active Forest Prevention Team (EPAF) from Granollers fire station, north of Barcelona, died on Thursday afternoon after falling over 20 metres when a rock he was sitting on gave way.

He was taken to Verge de la Cinta hospital in nearby Tortosa by helicopter, but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Officials announced the news at a press conference on Thursday evening, where they also said an investigation would be launched into the man’s death.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was among those to pay tribute to the firefighter, saying on X: “I deeply regret the death of a firefighter during the extinguishing of the fire in Paüls.

“My deepest condolences to his family and colleagues at the Catalan Fire Service.

“Thank you to the tremendous work carried out by firefighters and emergency services in fighting fires.”

Catalan president Salvador Illa also paid his condolences and announced a day of mourning across the region.

Serrano is the third person to die in wildfires in Catalunya this month after two farmers were killed in Segarra last week.

The current blaze, located in Paüls, has burnt over 3,300 hectares of land since it broke out on Monday, including hundreds of hectares in the Ports Nature Park.

One town was put into lockdown for 48 hours as the flames edged closer.

Thankfully, firefighters have since brought the inferno under control.
