British officials are studying plans to support, and even possibly evacuate, over 200,000 nationals stranded in the Gulf region following intense US-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks from Iran. Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the estimate includes residents, holidaymakers, and transit travellers, with many concentrated in high-traffic locations like the UAE. Foreign Office registration increased to at least 94,000 by the first days of March, including around 50,000 in the UAE alone, leading to urgent appeals for citizens in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, the Palestinian territories, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates to sign up for direct updates.

Travel advice has escalated dramatically, advising against all but essential travel to the UAE while urging those already present to shelter in place and follow local authorities. Airspace closures across major centres like Dubai and Doha have cancelled thousands of flights through fear of drone and missile attacks from Iran, which has left passengers stranded and raised fears of prolonged disruptions. Luxury hotels and infrastructure, including parts of Palm Jumeirah and Dubai International Airport, have sustained damage from intercepted missile debris.

Officials are currently said to be exploring multiple routes for the potential evacuation of tens of thousands, possibly through open airspace in Saudi Arabia or alternative corridors. Starmer has stressed unwavering support, stating this has been a deeply worrying period while pledging maximum assistance. No full-scale operation has launched yet, but preparations position this as one of Britain’s largest peacetime evacuations if conditions worsen.

Other nations launch similar repatriation efforts for stranded citizens

Thailand has moved rapidly with proactive measures, readying military and charter flights to repatriate citizens, especially from Iran. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced coordination with the Royal Thai Air Force, establishing a “war room” and 24-hour consular centre. Over 1,000 Thais in the UAE requested assistance, with complex overland options considered for those in Iran.

Australia issues stern warnings of serious disruptions, advising citizens, estimated at around 115,000 in the region, to put safety first and prepare independently. Discussions include military-assisted options if commercial services fail, though emphasis remains on shelter-in-place and hoping for airspace reopening.

European Union coordinates bloc-wide response to protect nationals

EU ambassadors and foreign ministers are convening emergency sessions to prioritise repatriation due to the flight chaos. However, in the past days, the European Commission has come under fire from critics for saying too little about the situation. Many hope that the UK’s pledges will spur European politicians into action.

That said, Spain is said to have activated its non-combatant evacuation contingency, placing an A400M aircraft on standby while advising around 30,000 nationals to shelter and prepare documents.

A striking new visual released by NASA has drawn attention to a phenomenon many people across Spain recently experienced first-hand: a vast cloud of Saharan dust drifting across Europe. Satellite data analysed by NASA’s Earth Observatory shows how a massive plume of desert dust moved north from Africa during the first days of March 2026, turning skies hazy and leaving behind the familiar “mud rain” that coated cars, streets and balconies across parts of Spain.

For several days, the dusty haze hung over the Iberian Peninsula and much of western Europe, carried by strong winter winds from the Sahara. While many residents simply noticed unusual skies or dirty rainfall, the event looked very different from orbit – where NASA’s monitoring systems captured the full scale of the atmospheric movement.

NASA satellite data reveals Saharan dust spreading across Europe

Using its GEOS atmospheric model (Goddard Earth Observing System), NASA recreated how the dust cloud developed between March 1 and March 9. The model combines satellite observations with atmospheric physics to track how particles move through the air.

The images show several large plumes of dust lifting from north-west Africa before being carried across the Mediterranean by high-altitude winds.

Part of the dust drifted westwards across the Atlantic Ocean, but another major stream travelled north, eventually reaching Spain, France and large areas of western Europe.

From space, the dust appeared as a broad brown cloud stretching across the region, explaining the murky skies many people noticed on the ground.

Residents reported the unusual conditions from southern Spain all the way to northern Europe, including southern England and even the Alps, where dust particles settled across mountain landscapes.

During the event, sunsets often appeared deeper red or orange as sunlight filtered through the suspended particles.

Why Spain often sees Saharan dust events

For people living in Spain, Saharan dust intrusions are not entirely unusual.

Meteorologists refer to the phenomenon as “calima”, a weather event where strong winds lift fine sand and dust from the Sahara and transport it across the Mediterranean.

Spain’s geographical position makes it particularly exposed to these episodes. When certain weather patterns develop — especially strong winds combined with low-pressure systems — dust can travel thousands of kilometres north.

In this case, winter winds pushed vast amounts of dust into the atmosphere, allowing it to spread widely across the continent.

Although the particles are tiny, they can remain suspended in the air for days, affecting visibility and air quality before eventually settling back to the ground.

Storm Regina helped trigger Spain’s famous ‘mud rain’

The dusty skies alone would have been noticeable enough, but another weather system turned the event into something even more visible on the ground.

The dust cloud arrived in Europe at roughly the same time as Storm Regina, a low-pressure system that moved across the Iberian Peninsula in early March.

As the storm brought rain to parts of Spain, France and southern England, the moisture mixed with the suspended dust particles in the atmosphere.

The result was the phenomenon many residents recognise immediately: mud rain.

Instead of clear raindrops, the precipitation carried microscopic grains of desert dust, leaving behind a thin brown film on cars, windows and outdoor surfaces.

Across southern and eastern Spain in particular, residents woke up to find vehicles and terraces covered in a dusty residue after the rain passed through.

From space, the scale of the phenomenon becomes clear

While mud rain is familiar to many Spaniards, the NASA imagery reveals just how large these dust events can be.

Seen from orbit, the plume covered enormous portions of western Europe, stretching thousands of kilometres from its origin in the Sahara.

According to NASA’s Earth Observatory, these dust transport events are an important part of the planet’s atmospheric system.

Saharan dust plays several roles in the global environment. It can influence air quality, cloud formation and even ocean ecosystems, as minerals from desert sand eventually settle into the sea and act as nutrients for marine life.

However, when the dust concentration is high, it can also affect visibility and worsen conditions for people with respiratory problems.

A reminder of how connected Earth’s weather systems are

Events like this highlight how weather patterns in one region can have visible consequences thousands of kilometres away.

Dust lifted from the deserts of northern Africa can cross continents in just a few days, affecting skies across Europe and sometimes even travelling across the Atlantic.

For residents in Spain, the phenomenon may have felt like a local inconvenience – cars suddenly coated in brown dust and skies looking strangely hazy.

But from space, the event tells a much bigger story.

NASA’s satellite observations show how a single atmospheric system can link the Sahara, the Mediterranean and Europe in one sweeping movement of air and dust, reminding us that the planet’s climate and weather systems are deeply interconnected.

And sometimes, what looks like a simple dirty rainstorm on the ground is actually part of a much larger spectacle unfolding high above the Earth.

While the country is becoming increasingly pet-friendly, hopping on a train, bus, or metro with your dog can feel like solving a high-stakes puzzle. For many expats and travelers, the assumption that pets are either “all in” or “all out” leads to a rude awakening at the turnstile.

From Madrid’s strict rush-hour bans to the “no-paws-on-the-floor” rule in Bilbao, the regulations are a patchwork of local laws that could leave you stranded, or facing a surprise fine. Before you grab the leash, here is the essential breakdown of how to move around Spain without the headache.

Train travel tends to be the most pet-friendly

Rail travel is generally one of the easiest ways to move around Spain with a pet. On services operated by Renfe, small animals such as dogs, cats and ferrets are usually allowed on many trains if they travel inside an approved carrier.

For high-speed AVE and long-distance routes, pets typically must weigh under around 10 kilograms and remain inside the carrier for the duration of the trip. Some routes also allow larger dogs to travel under specific conditions, including a leash, muzzle and an additional pet ticket.

Commuter rail services tend to be more flexible. On many local trains, dogs may travel without a carrier, although they must remain on a leash and may be required to wear a muzzle depending on the operator’s rules.

Metro systems vary widely across Spanish cities

Metro networks in Spain often allow dogs, but conditions can differ significantly depending on the city.

On Metro de Madrid, for example, dogs are permitted but cannot travel during weekday rush hours. They must be kept on a short leash and wear a muzzle while inside the system.

In Barcelona Metro, dogs can travel outside peak weekday hours provided they are on a lead and wearing a muzzle. Animals inside a carrier are generally allowed without time restrictions.

Meanwhile, Metro de Bilbao applies stricter rules in some cases, requiring dogs to be carried in arms or transported inside a carrier so they do not touch the train floor.

These differences mean passengers travelling between cities should always check the local transport operator’s rules before boarding with a pet.

Buses are usually the strictest option

Bus travel tends to be the most restrictive form of public transport for animals in Spain. Many long-distance coach companies only allow small pets, and often only if they remain inside a carrier.

Operators such as ALSA generally permit animals under specific conditions, usually limiting travel to small pets and requiring advance booking. In many cases the animal must remain in an approved transport box throughout the journey. Larger dogs are rarely accepted on long-distance buses, although assistance dogs are always allowed under national accessibility rules.

Mallorca shows how rules can change within the same island

Mallorca offers a good example of how pet rules can change depending on the transport network.

In Palma, city buses operated by EMT allow dogs to travel under certain conditions, typically requiring a leash and muzzle if the animal is not inside a carrier. Rail and metro services on the island also permit dogs with similar restrictions.

However, the situation is different on the island’s interurban bus network, which connects towns outside the capital. These buses generally allow assistance dogs but do not accept ordinary pets in the passenger area. As a result, travellers may find that a dog can accompany them on one part of a journey but not on the next.
