Hilarious homemade soapboxes completely stole the spotlight at the 24 Horas Deportivas (24-Hour Sports Festival), A steep downhill course packed with homemade karts, eccentric designs, and spectacular crashes provided the ultimate highlight for Estepona’s annual sporting event.
The ‘Autos Locos’ (Crazy Cars) soapbox derby saw brave participants launch gravity-powered vehicles from the Rotonda de Los Pensadores down to the Francisco Muñoz Perez sports complex. The race was a headline novelty for the town’s signature sporting weekend.
Evoking the nostalgia of classic soapbox derbies and the chaotic charm of Wacky Races, local teams spent weeks building vehicles designed to survive the descent and thrill the crowds.
Bold designs and spectacular spills steal the show
Estepona Town Hall praised the event as a genuine spectacle of speed and comedy. Officials noted that several makeshift machines took lines down the hill that defied engineering logic, triggering roars of laughter from the packed pavements.
Unlike standard motorsport, the rules stripped away engines and electronics. Competitors relied entirely on gravity, momentum, and a prayer, with judges scoring teams on visual flair alongside their final race times.
Among the colourful, joyfully designed cars were a Minions car, a fully loaded burger, an ice cream truck, the house including balloons from the movie UP, a pirate ship, egyptian themes and many many more.
Trophies were ultimately handed out across three distinct categories, fastest descent, most original design, and most spectacular performance.
