A 56-YEAR-OLD British woman has been arrested by South Yorkshire Police after a man was found dead in a hotel in Tenerife, a popular Spanish holiday hotspot. Russell Watts, age 63, from South Yorkshire, was found dead in his room on Saturday, January 10 at the Hotel Catalonia Punta Del Rey, located in the Candelaria municipality of the island.

Woman arrested in connection with beloved Brit’s death

A murder investigation was launched, and on Wednesday, February 25, South Yorkshire Police said they had arrested a 56-year-old woman from the Rotherham area on suspicion of murder and that she had been held in police custody.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Ben Wood called the case “complex” and has reiterated that the investigation is still in early stages. South Yorkshire Police are “carrying out a number of extensive enquiries to piece together the events which led to Russell’s death.”

Police urge witnesses to come forward as investigation ongoing

South Yorkshire Police are also appealing to guests of the Hotel Catalonia Punta Del Rey who were staying there around the same dates as Watts. They have asked for anyone who saw something suspicious or has information that could help the investigation to come forward with their tips.

“Even the smallest piece of information could prove crucial, and I would implore anyone who may know something to get in contact with us immediately,” said Detective Chief Inspector Ben Wood.

Loved ones share tributes to Watts on social media

Russell Watts was known for his characteristic dreadlocks and was a beloved member of his community in the Thrybergh area, on the outskirts of Rotherham. Social media has been flooded with tributes and messages of grief from family, friends and neighbours of Watts. In January, Thrybergh Top Club made a post on Facebook saying Watts was “loved by all and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.” The club called Watts a “character” and said he “brought energy to the club whenever he came in.”

“Our thoughts first and foremost remain with Russell’s family, friends and loved ones,” stated Detective Chief Inspector Wood.

The investigation is ongoing.
