Malaga Cathedral nears finish after 500 years of no end of epic delays

Published

on

Construction work on Malaga Cathedral is advancing steadily with plans to complete major elements by 2028 for its 500-year milestone. Persistent difficulties have turned this site into Spain’s other great unfinished church together with Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia.

Centuries of challenges delay Malaga’s landmark church

Severe underfunding repeatedly interrupted building on this emblematic Renaissance cathedral. Efforts began in 1528 on the ruins of an earlier mosque paused after six decades, leaving it vulnerable. Baroque phase additions came in the 18th century before funds ran dry again in 1783.

Environmental factors accelerate urgent repairs

Temporary coverings proved inadequate against rain and humidity, resulting in widespread damage to internal structures and ornaments. Experts identified the missing roof as the main vulnerability throughout its history. Nicknamed La Manquita for its incomplete tower, the building has caused passionate local debates.

Massive roofing project revives historical designs

Specialists are constructing a large sloped tiled roof in wood and stone, following original 18th-century architect proposals to handle water drainage efficiently. Covering over half the area of existing parts, the works incorporate pine timber from northern Spain and cream-coloured tiles matching local traditions. Restoration extends to terraces above chapels, the central pediment and baroque balustrade elements.

Public sentiment evolves with ongoing developments

Initial resistance from some quarters favoured preserving the unfinished state, yet visible changes win increasing support. City leaders overcame earlier political hurdles to push the project forward with the southern port city’s economic boom. Future phases will tackle seven remaining towers and further upper works.

Malaga enjoys economic prosperity as a southern European port, making this heritage restoration a crowning achievement. New interior views of the roof space will soon allow visitors to appreciate construction methods and stylistic continuity across different eras. Architectural harmony continues despite centuries of evolution from initial fortress-like plans to the current luminous hall-church design. Now the race is on: Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia is said to be on track for completion in 2034.

The award-winning PaGAGini from Yllana Teatro and violinist Ara Malikian takes to the stage on Friday, April 24.

The celebrated and unconventional show will be held at Estepona’s Auditorio Felipe VI for a single performance of live music and fun.

The event is a co-production between Yllana Teatro, one of Spain’s foremost physical comedy companies and internationally renowned virtuoso violinist Ara Malikian. Together, they have created a fantastically different show that is part classical concert, part comedy performance, and entirely unique.

The unique show aims to make classical music accessible to a wider audience

PaGAGnini takes audiences on a journey through some of the greatest moments in classical music, but with a twist. Four highly skilled musicians perform the pieces live while Yllana’s trademark brand of humour and organised chaos unfolds around them. The result is what the creators themselves describe as a “Des-Concierto”, a deliberate play on the Spanish word for concert. Classical music is fused with other musical styles in a way that is both surprising and highly entertaining.

The show is designed to break down the barriers that can make classical music feel inaccessible for some people, opening up the genre to a wider audience without sacrificing musical quality. Audiences who may never have sat through a traditional recital are invited to discover the beauty of classical passages from an entirely different, and hilarious, point of view.

The award winning show is performed in over 20 countries

PaGAGnini has performed in more than 20 countries and collected a number of prestigious awards along the way. The date in Estepona gives people an exciting opportunity to see a world-class production on their doorstep.

The venue, Teatro Auditorio Felipe VI, is located at Calle Diputado Ignacio Mena, in the centre of Estepona. The performance begins at 9pm on Friday, April 24.

Tickets are currently on sale via the theatre website. For those who prefer to purchase in person, the box office at the venue will also be open on the day of the performance, from two hours before the show begins.

For an evening of classical cackles check out PaGAGnini and their one of a kind show.

Marbella town hall has strengthened beach accessibility across the municipality this season, with nine assisted bathing points now in operation along the coastline. The service launched during Holy Week and will remain active until the end of September covering the full length of the summer season.

Positioned every two and a half to three kilometres, the points provide uninterrupted coverage from Cabopino in the east to Guadalmina in the west, spanning the full 27 kilometres of Marbella’s coastline. No matter where you choose to spend your beach day, assistance is never far away.

Mayor Angeles Muñoz explained the thinking behind the initiative: “Marbella is very fortunate to have 27 kilometres of coastline and we understood long ago that we should implement all possible resources so that anyone, regardless of their circumstances, can enjoy our beaches.” She described the distribution as guaranteeing “complete coverage” along the shoreline and called it “a clear commitment to inclusion and quality.”

The glorious beaches can now be fully enjoyed by everyone

The service includes amphibious chairs and specialised staff who assist people with reduced mobility, elderly residents from care homes, and those with special needs. Importantly, accessing the service is straightforward. Anyone requiring support simply needs to make a phone call to arrange their assistance and enjoy bathing in complete safety.

Physical infrastructure has also been improved alongside the staffed service. Beach access walkways have been widened from 1.5 metres to three metres, a change that significantly improves mobility and ease of access to the shore for users with difficulties.

Mayor Muñoz also noted that the programme is already well used by senior care homes, whose residents benefit greatly from the opportunity to enjoy a safe and comfortable day by the sea.

Marbella’s world-famous beaches can now be fully enjoyed by everyone, with the nine points spread along the coast and trained staff on hand throughout the summer. The service runs until the end of September, those interested can book this assisted bathing service through the free telephone number 658 618 333

Estepona Finally Gains Cheap Central Parking

Estepona visitors can now enjoy far lower parking costs right in the heart of this popular Costa del Sol town. Council-run underground facilities now compete head-on with private car parks and charge just €1 per day, €2 for overnight stays, or €3 for a full 24 hours. These rates contrast hugely with private options that often reach €17 daily and can include extra fees.

Hotel guests in the old town area previously faced high parking bills that added considerably to holiday expenses. Many properties, such as Hotel Pilar in Plaza de las Flores, provide only minor discount vouchers worth €2 off private rates. That still leaves substantial costs even after any reduction, especially where on-street spaces prove limited or unavailable. Now the centre operates a low-emissions zone.

New municipal facility opens with 131 spaces

The council has opened an underground car park beneath the town hall building on Avenida San Lorenzo. Capacity reaches 131 vehicles as part of the growing municipal network designed to ease pressure on central zones. Drivers can access the site easily and pay predictable flat fees without hidden surcharges.

This development forms part of broader improvements that benefit both residents and tourists planning longer stays. Calculations for total trip costs in Estepona become straightforward, helping families and couples budget accurately for time in the garden town.

Avenida San Lorenzo reopens after major upgrades

Roadworks on Avenida San Lorenzo between Calle África and Prolongación Cristo Rey have finally finished to everyone’s relief, allowing traffic to flow in both directions once more. Hidralia, the water services concession holder, carried out the project through improvement levies. Works covered around 2,800 square metres of carriageway and pavements.

Teams have replaced water and sewage pipes to meet modern demand for flow and pressure. Pavements on the eastern side received standardised widths, while all affected utilities underwent renewal. Fresh surfacing on the road and walkways matches the style of nearby streets for a consistent and “bonito” look.

Practical benefits for Costa del Sol trips

These changes deliver welcome relief for anyone driving to central Estepona, including year-round residents wanting to visit the shops. Affordable parking has removed a common and much-gripped-about barrier for short breaks or extended visits. Combined road and infrastructure upgrades have improved access greatly and delivered daily convenience without complicated charges.

The Estepona council continues expanding its low-cost parking network, making this Andalusian destination even more appealing for drivers. Guests can now focus on enjoying the town’s attractions rather than worrying about high vehicle storage expenses.

A great time to test the new low-cost parking will be this coming weekend when Estepona celebrates its rescheduled Foreign Residents’ Day on Saturday, April 25.
