Mercadona breaks tradition with extended summer hours in Axarquia and Costa Tropical

Published

on

Mercadona are beginning to break with tradition with their Sunday opening rules. For decades, the massive chain of supermarkets that was born in Valencia and now has spread to be a staple of Spanish supermarket supplies has strictly kept to more or less traditional opening times from Monday to Saturday, and strictly staying closed on bank holidays.

This year, however, the company of Joan Roig has started to realise that it’s time to get with the times and not lose out to competitors like Lidl and Aldi, and to keep some of its stores selling all 7 days a week. So, those at this busy time of year preparing family meals, or packing a picnic for the beach can stock up on last-minute supplies from Mercadona.

Summer timetable change begins 22 June

Mercadona introduces extended daily trading from 9am to 10pm at certain branches between June 22 and August 30. This adds half an hour to the usual closing time of 9.30pm to match evolving customer routines when daylight stretches further into the evening.

Reasons behind the longer trading window

Store operators note the move responds directly to altered buying patterns in warmer months. Families and visitors make more evening trips for groceries, prompting this practical response across tourist-heavy zones.

Axarquia and Costa Tropical branches adopting the change

Only outlets in areas with strong visitor numbers or steady local demand will follow the new timetable. Confirmed locations appear below for Algarrobo, Nerja, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox, Vélez-Málaga, Almuñécar, Salobreña and Motril.

  • Algarrobo branch at Algarrobo Costa on C/ Casa Balate S/N joins the extended hours.
  • Nerja sites in calle San Miguel and urbanización Sierra Mar welcome shoppers later each day.
  • Rincon de la Victoria supermarkets at Urbanización de los Olivos, Cotomar and Torre de Benagalbón participate fully.
  • Torrox outlet at Torrox Costa on Ctra. N340 S/N follows suit.
  • Velez-Malaga stores in Chilches, El Tomillar and Torre del Mar operate until 22:00.
  • Almuñecar features two branches on the new schedule.
  • Salobreña location adopts the summer extension.
  • Motril outlets number two in total for late evening access.

Practical benefits for holidaymakers and residents

Shoppers preparing beach picnics or evening meals gain extra flexibility without rushing. This adjustment helps local households and international visitors maintain routines comfortably during busy summer weeks. Regular checks on individual store pages remain advisable, since not every Mercadona supermarket in the region adopts identical schedules.

Overall the initiative demonstrates Mercadona commitment to customer convenience on the Costa del Sol. Many will appreciate the opportunity to complete essential purchases after typical daytime activities wind down.

50 hikers complete 14km Sierra Nevada route from Almuñecar before summer pause

Organisers at the Almuñecar Council Sports Area have delivered another successful session within the 2026 Hiking Programme. Fifty participants joined a medium-difficulty fourteen-kilometre hike through the Sierra Nevada area. Everyone took part in direct engagement with one of Andalucia’s most emblematic natural settings. The Almuñecar hiking programme supports regular outdoor activity. Such walks support physical fitness and mental refreshment through time spent in mountain surroundings.

Walkers covered ground passing several locations of note during their outing. These included Hoya de la Mora, Telesqui Montebajo, Rio Dilar, Chorreras del Molinillo, Barranco del Misterio, Lagunillo, Loma de En Medio, the source of Rio Dilar, Lagunillas de la Virgen, Collado de las Yeguas and Virgen de las Nieves.

Melting snow influenced the landscape and created fresh water flows across the terrain. Every section offered awe-inspiring views of the changing mountain environment typical for this season in the Sierra Nevada range.

Programme schedule and future plans

Council-led hiking programme organisers selected this event as the final activity before the summer pause. A break follows during the warmer months when high temperatures make such routes like this less comfortable. Activities resume on September 20 with new proposals directed at further exploration of natural spaces that possess great landscape and environmental value.

Preparation work during the pause allows the team to refresh the calendar and introduce variety for returning and new participants in the Almuñecar hiking programme.

How to register for the Almuñecar hiking programme

Registrations are still open for all upcoming sessions in the series. Interested individuals can sign up in person at the Francisco Bonet Municipal Sports Stadium. Opening hours run from Monday to Thursday with morning availability between 9am and 2pm plus evening availability from 5pm to 10pm. More details await those who visit the Municipal Sports Area in person or who ring the contact numbers 958 88 31 42 and 673 369 309.

Adjustments cover popular centres and chains along the coast from Rincon de la Victoria to Motril. People benefit from longer hours at major outlets while smaller towns rely on nearby options.

Rincon de la Victoria Shopping Centre

Rincon de la Victoria Shopping Centre welcomes Sunday visitors with its large Carrefour and other stores until September ends.

People in the area can enjoy extended hours at this convenient spot near the motorway. Free parking supports easy access for families and tourists alike during peak season.

El Ingenio Centre near Velez-Malaga

El Ingenio Shopping Centre in the Velez-Malaga area opens on Sundays until the end of September. Eroski supermarket inside provides full shopping options during these extra days. They are now open as from 9am to 10pm every day.

Shoppers from Torrox and nearby towns often use this facility for bigger purchases. Over 100 stores and cinema facilities add leisure value on Sundays.

Supermarkets Across Nerja, Torrox and Frigiliana

Nerja offers Mercadona, Lidl, Aldi and Carrefour branches with varying Sunday availability in summer. Select Mercadona stores may announce some Sunday opening once July begins, while all Aldi, Carrefour Express and Lidl stores plan to open until 10pm on Sundays.

The same goes for Torrox, Almuñecar and Salobreña, with Sunday opening in Mercadona defined by each specific store.

Almuñecar Costa Tropical Sunday Choices

Motril’s Alcampo is now open all day on Sundays until after the summer holidays, as are all Lidl and Aldi stores. Most Dia stores along the coast stay open until 3pm, while inland branches show more limited hours.

Mercadona stores generally remain closed on Sundays and bank holidays through the summer, with some local exceptions announced closer to the time. Families across these areas now plan weekend errands with greater flexibility thanks to the updated times at key centres and discount chains.

Shoppers should confirm exact hours directly with stores, as permitted trading days follow regional rules for 2026.
