Workers have started maintenance on the unusual, but locally-loved landmark, the ship house in Almuñecar.
Ongoing improvements draw local attention
A team of specialists from Cordoba has been carrying out painting and repair tasks on the exterior of La Casa Meu Barco. This distinctive property sits at Avenida del Mediterraneo 34, near Playa de San Cristobal in Almuñecar. Family members of the late owner Pepe Pérez have been directing efforts to refresh its nautical appearance and preserve its character for years ahead.
History of a unique maritime creation
José María Pérez Ruiz, known affectionately as Pepe Pérez, constructed the home during the early 1970s. A former merchant marine engineer, he shaped the building like a motor ship around 75 metres in length. Salvaged ship elements, including portholes, masts, wheels, and ropes, which feature throughout the structure. Many locals and holidaymakers regard the house as an important example of personal creativity and a recognisable sight on the seafront. Pepe passed away in January 2025, yet his vision continues through family care.
Traffic adjustments during work period
These activities require vehicles to use alternating directions on the avenue section. Drivers should expect minor delays while crews complete the facade work. The council has advised caution and patience in this area.
Community views on landmark care
Residents have enthusiastically expressed approval for actions that keep this private residence in good condition. Comments on local channels describe the property as a cherished feature that adds interest and unique character to the area. Many recall childhood views of its ship-like form and appreciate continued attention from those responsible.
Local neighbour Mari Carmen Vaquero said, “Bravo por los cordobeses – They are finally getting it fixed!” Santiago Álvarez, said,”I the renovation were to transform it into a museum ship, we would have a tourist attraction that this area of Almuñecar doesn’t currently offer. Visitors need encouragement to explore and spend time here. This area is somewhat isolated from the main tourist spots, and seeing it in its current state of disrepair is less appealing to passersby.”
Visitor interest still strong
People often stop to photograph the detailed exterior from public footpaths. Its position offers easy access for anyone exploring the Costa Tropical. Future plans from the family may include further improvements, though the home stays closed to public entry. This project demonstrates commitment to maintaining Almuñecar attractions without major disruption.
