Benidorm offers young drivers up to €250 towards driving lessons

Young people in Benidorm could receive up to €250 towards the cost of getting their driving licence under a new municipal scheme designed to make driving more affordable.

The Ayuntamiento de Benidorm has allocated €70,000 to the initiative, which is expected to help between 280 and 300 young residents with some of the costs involved in obtaining a driving permit.

The scheme comes as the cost of learning to drive continues to represent a significant expense for young people, particularly those who need a licence to access education, employment or greater independence.

Who can apply?

The scheme is open to people aged between 15 and 30, inclusive, who are residents of Benidorm and were already registered on the municipal padrón before January 1, 2026.

Applicants must have obtained their driving licence between January 1 and October 31, 2026.

The subsidy applies to licences issued by Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), including car, motorbike and other categories.

It also covers the AM licence for mopeds and light quadricycles, although the amount available for this category is lower.

How much can young drivers receive?

Successful applicants who obtain a standard driving permit can receive €250, while those obtaining an AM moped licence can receive €125.

The funding is intended to contribute towards the cost of the registration, theory lessons and examination fees.

The Ayuntamiento estimates that its €70,000 budget will provide support for at least 280 applicants, with the final number potentially reaching around 300 depending on the amounts awarded.

For young residents facing the full cost of driving school, theory preparation and tests, the payment could therefore help reduce some of the upfront financial burden.

Applications open in November

Young people who meet the requirements will be able to apply between November 1 and November 17, 2026.

Applications must be submitted online through Benidorm’s electronic headquarters, with a specific procedure to be made available for the subsidy.

There is also an important deadline for anyone who has not yet obtained their licence.

Those who pass their driving test and receive their permit between November 1 and December 31 will not qualify for the 2026 scheme. However, the Ayuntamiento says they will be eligible for the 2027 call for applications.

The new subsidy is being introduced through Benidorm’s Youth and Education departments, with the local government highlighting the potential importance of access to driving for young people’s mobility, employment opportunities and independence.
