A British couple have received a one-year-and-four-month prison term for leaving their three young children unsupervised at a Spanish holiday resort.

Court imposes suspended sentence and contact ban

Judicial authorities in Torremolinos announced the agreement on Friday, June 12. The judge suspended actual imprisonment provided the couple commits no further offences over two years. Other restrictions imposed prevent them from exercising parental authority for two years and eight months. They must also stay at least 500 metres away from the children during that period.

Two of the youngsters tested positive for cocaine during medical checks at Malaga’s Maternal and Infant Hospital. All three will now stay in the care of Andalucia social services. Officials plan to coordinate with the British consulate for their return to the UK.

Discovery at Holiday World Resort pool area

Staff and guests spotted the children, aged six months, one year, and four years, wandering in the common zones and pool areas of the all-inclusive Holiday World Resort. Witnesses reported the toddlers appeared to have spent considerable time without any adult supervision. Some showed signs of sunburn.

National Police officers arrived quickly and found the parents drinking at a nearby location within the complex. After interviewing witnesses and completing enquiries, authorities arrested both adults on suspicion of child abandonment. Medical teams transferred the children to hospital for full assessments.

Long-term measures apply nationwide

This ruling carries a compulsory enforcement across all locations. Social services are looking after the children’s welfare until arrangements for their relocation conclude. The case has drawn attention to parental duties during overseas holidays and the quick response from local emergency teams.

The incident took place when concerned visitors alerted resort personnel about the unattended minors near the pools. Officers acted quickly to locate the parents and to guarantee the children’s safety. Medical results confirmed substance exposure in the two youngest, which led to immediate protective steps being taken.

Authorities continue to prioritise the minors’ wellbeing while preparing their transfer home.

Scottish holidaymaker Aileen wrote an emotional letter to Benalmadena lifeguards after they came to her aid when she lost consciousness on the beach.

The handwritten note was sent by 62-year-old Aileen days after lifeguards responded when she became unwell on the beach on May 29. Addressed to lifeguard Melanie Waller and the SOS team, the message thanked them for their “care and assistance” during the incident.

“Thank you very much to everyone for your help and attention. Knowing they were there, I was able to enjoy the rest of my vacation. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Aileen wrote.

Lifeguards responded after woman became dizzy and lost consciousness

According to reports, the incident occurred at around 5.30pm on May 29 when staff working from a hammock station in front of the Gloria Bendita beach bar alerted Benalmadena’s lifeguard service that a woman was suffering from dizziness and required urgent assistance.

First responders Melanie Waller and Rodrigo Escobar were dispatched to the scene, where they found Aileen sitting on the ground displaying symptoms of dizziness.

During their initial assessment, the woman was not responding normally and shortly afterwards lost consciousness again. Lifeguards reported that she appeared pale, had bluish lips and was experiencing breathing difficulties.

Given her condition, emergency protocols were activated and medical assistance was requested, with the situation initially assessed as a possible Priority 1 emergency.

Emergency response praised after tourist recovers

After several minutes receiving assistance, Aileen regained consciousness, allowing responders to reassess the incident as a Priority 2 case.

During the intervention, she complained of thirst and was given sugar water under the supervision of the lifeguard team. Once her condition stabilised, responders identified her as a Scottish tourist visiting Benalmadena on holiday.

Local reports praised the quick actions of both the hammock attendant who raised the alarm and the lifeguard team that responded immediately, enabling medical resources to be activated without delay.

The incident ended on a positive note when Aileen later contacted the service to express her gratitude. Her letter has since been highlighted as recognition of the work carried out daily by Benalmadena’s beach rescue teams in supporting residents and visitors along the increasingly busy coastline.

Strengthened beach safety operation across Benalmadena

Benalmadena has recently announced the increase in coastal safety in the area with the launch of its summer vigilance and rescue operation, running from 15 May to 15 October. The plan brings in 45 lifeguards, rescue watercraft, a staffed ambulance and rapid‑response equipment across nine points of the coastline, to assist beach services during the areas busiest months.

The first half of 2026 has looked like a building site on Benalmadena’s front, but things are starting to look good at last. Workers have finally finished the major project to update Castillo El Bil-Bil in Benalmadena. The local council invested almost €1 million to protect this key heritage site and boost its role in tourism and culture across the Costa del Sol.

Funding sources behind comprehensive upgrades

Council officials allocated €654,000 from European funds linked to national resilience programmes. Benalmadena council covered the remaining costs. This budget supported full modernisation of facilities, better accessibility throughout the building, interior restorations, facade repairs, better climate systems and energy efficiency steps such as new photovoltaic panels.

Local politicians praise heritage achievements

Juan Antonio Lara, mayor of Benalmadena, described the project as one of the largest recent efforts in local historic preservation. Lara said that El Bil-Bil now appears refreshed, easier to reach, more energy efficient and ready to serve as a leading cultural and tourist reference for the city.

Lara visited the site with Presi Aguilera, councillor for heritage and tourism, and stressed how this work recovers fresh areas for residents and guests while strengthening El Bil-Bil as an icon of the Costa del Sol and a showcase for Benalmadena’s identity.

New facilities better visitor experience

The council has created a dedicated tourist information office inside the castle. Additional zones now promote local history, culture and gastronomy, giving visitors a richer experience of the quirky little castle with elements of characteristic Benalmadena traditions.

The initiative has been another step in the right direction in the council plans to strengthen tourist and cultural assets across the town. Improved conservation makes sure El Bil-Bil continues drawing guests year-round and supports ongoing activities in social, cultural and tourism fields that project a positive image of the area both in Spain and internationally.

The project represents a clear commitment to balancing historic protection with modern demands, making Benalmadena stronger for future visitors seeking authentic experiences on the Costa del Sol.
