A British family has issued a stark warning about vaping after the death of an 18-year-old holidaymaker in Spain, following what they believe was a reaction to vape oil purchased in Benidorm.
Harry Whitton, from Dundee in Scotland, died while on holiday on the Costa Blanca with his girlfriend. His devastated family say they are still searching for answers but hope that sharing his story could help raise awareness of the potential risks associated with vaping products.
Family shares concerns after preliminary findings
Harry’s father, Colin Whitton, revealed that the family had received preliminary post-mortem findings and wanted to address speculation surrounding the teenager’s death.
According to the family, Harry had recently started using a vape oil he bought while in Benidorm. They believe it may have played a role in the medical emergency that followed, although investigations are continuing and no official cause of death has yet been confirmed.
In a social media post, Colin said the family wanted to highlight what they see as the dangers of vaping products and the lack of long-term research into some vape oils and liquids currently available on the market.
The family stressed that many questions remain unanswered and that they are awaiting further information from the authorities.
Sudden medical emergency on holiday
According to Harry’s father, the teenager became seriously unwell after he and his girlfriend had gone out for lunch while on holiday in Benidorm.
The family believes Harry suffered a severe reaction which caused his throat to constrict, leading to breathing difficulties. Both he and his girlfriend had shared similar food and drinks during the day, including a cocktail with lunch, but the vape oil was reportedly one of the few differences between what they had consumed.
Spanish authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Community pays tribute
Back in Scotland, tributes have poured in for the popular teenager.
Harry worked in the hospitality lounges at Dundee FC’s Dens Park stadium, where he was well known among colleagues and supporters. The club described him as a friendly and familiar face who was highly valued by staff and warmly regarded by fans.
Meanwhile, the family has launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the costs of bringing Harry home from Spain and arranging his funeral.
A spokesperson for the UK’s Foreign Office confirmed it is supporting the family and remains in contact with local authorities in Spain as investigations continue.
The tragedy has also reignited debate over vaping safety, particularly surrounding vape oils and products purchased abroad, as Harry’s family urges others to exercise caution while more answers are sought.
