€12.7 million investment brings a new health centre to Torre del Mar

Published

on

Residents across Torre del Mar can start to look forward to better primary health care services after local leaders from the regional government and Velez-Malaga council signed an agreement for a brand-new health centre in the Poniente zone. The development forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise healthcare infrastructure across Andalucia and meet rising demand from population growth. Positive outcomes include shorter waiting times and access to updated medical environments that support both patients and healthcare workers effectively.

Project investment and delivery timeline

An investment of €12.7 million will cover all building costs, technical direction and associated works. Funding comes fully from the Andalucian Health Service. Council officials provide the necessary land parcel beside Centro Vals while preparing initial and detailed project designs. Building activity is due to run from 2027 until 2029, with the service managing construction, fitting out equipment and launching operations once complete.

Meeting needs of a growing population

Torre del Mar currently serves over 23,900 residents, with numbers rising fast to more than 100,000 during summer months. The Velez-Malaga area as a whole counts 86,048 inhabitants according to the latest figures. Existing health facilities include three centres plus several local clinics, yet additional capacity proves essential in this dynamic coastal area of Axarquia. The new centre is hoped to ease pressure on services and bring modern facilities closer to expanding residential zones. As local resident Torreño put it, “At this rate of growth of the foreign population (regular and irregular), it will not take long for the system to be overwhelmed. In any case, a welcome development.”

Strong collaboration for community benefit

The agreement creates a joint monitoring group with members from both administrations to oversee progress and make sure all commitments stay on track. Regional authorities view such partnerships as key to delivering projects that improve service quality and accessibility for patients and staff members. Council leaders express satisfaction that united action turns important community priorities into reality through shared dedication.

Broader strategy for healthcare advancement

The facility will join wider regional plans meant to better primary care capacity and prepare systems for future demographic changes. Modern design will support efficient patient care and professional working conditions in line with contemporary standards. Everyone involved is celebrating the step as positive progress that strengthens public health provision for current and future generations in the area. Locals feel optimistic about future health provisions now.

Residents across Torre del Mar have received welcome news after their council backed a series of practical measures during the June plenary session. Cross-party support delivered clear responses to community feedback on health, services, safety and daily connections. Leaders showed they take resident concerns seriously by acting together on several fronts.

Responding to health worries over mobile phone tower

Neighbours have been voicing worries for several years about the telecom installation in Calle Medico Ros Alferez. Council members voted unanimously to remove the eyesore after long-standing complaints linked it to local health issues. Past work already prevented three new mobile phone masts during the current term, with one taken down after legal action. Officials now seek extra powers from central government to manage licences and require health safety checks on existing sites. A study will explore moving similar equipment out of populated areas while protecting service quality.

Advancing safety and community information

Further unanimous votes backed permanent information campaigns on council rules to help people understand local expectations and encourage good relations, especially among younger residents, tourists and motorhome users. Another measure supports video surveillance systems in schools, care homes, day centres and other public support sites to protect those most at risk.

Addressing calls for safer neighbourhood ties

Residents from Ensanche Oeste, working through the local pressure group AVEOtorre, talked of the need for better pedestrian access to the promenade after the original route was removed. Their demonstration renewed requests for paving, progress on the roundabout and completion of Vial-7. Council leaders had already pledged to prioritise accessibility improvements, and current projects continue to deliver safer connections for the growing community of over 1,300 homes.

These unanimous outcomes demonstrate a council ready to engage with feedback and deliver results on health, services and quality of life in Torre del Mar and the wider area. Either that, or they wanted the proposals out of the way so they could quickly go on their summer holidays. In any case, progress has unanimously been made. Further work will build on this advancement for the benefit of local people.

Strong community spirit drives the fair

La Caleta de Vélez is preparing for its annual feria, with an emphasis on practical support for local families. This year’s programme has been shaped by Deputy major David Segura, Councillor Lourdes Piña, and the local festivities committee, who have prioritised community needs and intergenerational involvement.

Fundraising for the local nursery

A main focus of the 2026 edition is a fundraising effort for Escuela Infantil Virgen del Mar, the local nursery. Money raised will go towards installing a protective shade structure, to improve outdoor conditions for young children in the intense summer heat.

Saturday’s sardinada popular, a sardine cook‑out, will be led by espeteros keeping food traditions from the Axarquia coast. On Sunday you can enjoy Paella prepared by a local neighbourhood association.
