Elda opens restored Civil War air raid shelter as new heritage attraction

Elda has unveiled a restored Civil War air raid shelter beneath Plaza de Arriba, transforming the historic underground refuge into a modern museum and visitor attraction. The project preserves an important part of the city’s past while creating an educational space that explores the experiences of local residents during the conflict.

Elda has completed the restoration and museum development of the Civil War air raid shelter beneath Plaza de Arriba, transforming the historic underground structure into a new visitor attraction dedicated to the city’s collective memory.

Mayor Ruben Alfaro and Councillor for Public Spaces Jose Antonio Amat officially presented the finished project during a guided tour of the galleries, explaining the work carried out to preserve and interpret the site.

The museum features information panels, historical photographs, technical drawings and graphic displays explaining the shelter’s construction, its role during the conflict and the daily lives of local residents who sought refuge there.

Interactive displays and sound installations have also been incorporated to create an immersive educational experience, allowing visitors of all ages to learn about Elda’s wartime history and the importance of protecting the civilian population.

Preserving history for future generations

Mayor Alfaro described the project as an important step in preserving the city’s heritage while creating a valuable educational resource promoting peace and coexistence.

He added that the restored shelter forms part of Elda’s wider strategy to regenerate its historic centre, helping to attract visitors while safeguarding an important chapter in the city’s past.

The underground refuge has now been incorporated into Elda’s growing network of cultural and tourist attractions, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to discover a unique part of the municipality’s history. By combining historical interpretation with interactive technology, the new museum provides an engaging insight into life in Elda during the Civil War while ensuring the stories of those who sheltered beneath the city are preserved for future generations.
