Police in Velez-Malaga issued a direct call for public assistance on Friday, July 10, to help determine how two separate fires erupted and rapidly escalated across the town on Thursday evening. These incidents mobilised more than one hundred emergency workers and forced the evacuation of around a dozen families, though fortunately no injuries were reported.

First blaze breaks out close to A-7 motorway

This first fire started shortly after 7.30pm near the A-7 motorway at the Velez-Malaga exit at the kilometre 954 marker behind El Ingenio shopping centre. Flames quickly spread through dense vegetation, reed beds and scrubland situated between the Prado del Rey fairground and Juan Carlos I Avenue. Strong winds intensified the challenge for firefighters, who focused efforts on containing the perimeter to protect nearby commercial premises, the roadway and populated urban zones.

Preventive actions protect shopping centre visitors

Closeness to the shopping centre called for immediate safety steps. Drivers received instructions to move vehicles from the closest car park while emergency teams kept routes clear for fire engines and support units. Crews from fire stations in Velez-Malaga, Nerja and Rincon de la Victoria joined local police, national police and traffic officers from the Guardia Civil, bringing total personnel involved above one hundred.

Second fire threatens residential and historic zones

A separate blaze developed in the areas of La Gloria and Arroyo de San Sebastian, close to La Fortaleza and pathways leading into the historic centre. This fire impacted scrub, pine and low mountain vegetation near homes. Flames rekindled during Friday afternoon in the La Gloria and La Fortaleza sectors, requiring new deployment of provincial consortium firefighters.

Investigators examine multiple ignition points

Police sources confirmed an active inquiry into the precise causes of both incidents. Reports indicate at least two ignition points appeared almost simultaneously in the first fire, separated by some distance, raising questions about possible deliberate action. Residents who observed suspicious activity or hold relevant photographs or details should contact local police or national police forces promptly. Officials stressed that any piece of information could prove vital to ongoing efforts.

Damage assessment continues

Initial estimates place the affected area from the first fire at around four hectares, pending final measurement after full cooling and inspection of the ground. Police officers continue to analyse all available evidence while keeping the public informed through official channels. This coordinated response helped prevent greater harm to property and residents in the affected parts of Velez-Malaga.
