A 62-year-old man was assisted by firefighters after suffering an ankle injury following a fall on a rural path near Agost, in Alicante province. The incident took place on the Camino de las Espejaras, a countryside route known for walking and outdoor activity. According to information shared by the provincial fire service, the man sustained a sprain after falling and was unable to continue without assistance.
Emergency teams respond quickly to remote location
Firefighters from San Vicente del Raspeig were deployed to the scene with a light vehicle, allowing them to reach the injured man quickly despite the area’s limited access.
Once on site, the team assessed the situation and immobilised the man before transporting him on a stretcher. Due to the uneven terrain, the evacuation required careful handling to ensure his safety while moving him towards waiting medical services. The injured man was then handed over to healthcare professionals for further evaluation and treatment.
Rural paths pose hidden risks for walkers
Although routes like Camino de las Espejaras are popular for their natural surroundings and relative quiet, incidents like this highlight the potential risks involved. Uneven ground, loose stones, and isolated stretches can make even minor falls more serious, particularly for older walkers. Without immediate access to assistance, injuries such as sprains can quickly become difficult to manage alone. Emergency services regularly respond to similar incidents across inland areas of Alicante, where hiking and rural tourism continue to grow in popularity.
A reminder to take precautions outdoors
Authorities often recommend basic precautions when using rural trails, including wearing appropriate footwear, carrying a mobile phone, and avoiding isolated routes alone where possible. In this case, the quick response of the fire brigade ensured the situation remained under control, and the injured man received timely care.
While the incident did not result in serious harm, it serves as a reminder that even short or familiar routes can present unexpected challenges. As outdoor activities become more common across the Costa Blanca, emergency teams continue to play an important role in responding to accidents and ensuring public safety in both urban and rural environments.
