Torrevieja has restarted its free Camina Torrevieja walking programme, encouraging older residents to stay active while meeting other people and enjoying the town together.
Eight organised walks are scheduled between September and December, with the next outing taking place on Wednesday, September 23 at 8:45 AM. The programme combines regular physical activity with opportunities for residents to socialise and make new connections.
Eight organised walks will take place across Torrevieja between September and December
Following the return of the programme, further walks are scheduled for October 8 and 21, November 4 and 17, and December 2 and 18.
Each outing starts from the Social Welfare Department offices at Calle Torrevejenses Ausentes 39.
Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing and suitable footwear for walking, as well as bringing water and sun protection.
The programme is free to join and is organised by Torrevieja’s Public Health and Social Welfare departments, making regular organised exercise accessible to older residents without the cost of joining a fitness programme.
The next opportunity to take part is on September 23, when walkers will meet for an 8:45 AM start.
Group walking aims to tackle loneliness while encouraging regular physical activity
Although Camina Torrevieja encourages residents to remain physically active, the benefits of the programme are not intended to stop there.
Walking as part of a group provides opportunities to talk, meet other residents and build social connections while taking part in gentle exercise.
That social element can be particularly valuable for people who have fewer opportunities to meet others regularly, with the programme helping to tackle unwanted loneliness and isolation.
The initiative also involves the municipality’s Mental Health Care and Monitoring Service, known as SASEM, reflecting the wider emphasis on physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
By combining exercise with regular opportunities to socialise, the walks are intended to make activity an enjoyable part of everyday life rather than simply a fitness session.
