During the first days of June, Puerto de Mazarron became the epicentre of fine gastronomy on the Costa Calida with the special Rojo & Red Gastronomic Days 2026 event, a programme that brought together three talented, Michelin-starred chefs from the Basque Country in the idyllic southeastern municipality. The event combined haute cuisine, tastings, music, and activities for the whole family, and re-established Puerto de Mazarron as a hub for food and culture in Murcia.

An event that united world-class chefs in Puerto de Mazarron

The 2026 edition of the event took place from Friday, June 5 to Tuesday, June 9 on the Paseo Agustín Herrerín. Already established as one of the great gastronomic events of the Region of Murcia, this year was dedicated to the vibrant and savoury Basque cuisine and brought together industry-leading chefs, producers, wineries, and hospitality establishments. The programme highlighted culinary excellence, boosted tourism, and gave a jolt of life to the local Puerto de Mazarron economy.

One of the main draws of this edition of the event was the participation of three renowned chefs from the Basque Country, all of whom were awarded the coveted and prestigious Michelin star: Sergio Ortiz, from Restaurante Zarate in Bilbao; Julen Bergantiños, from Restaurante Islares in Bilbao; and Fernando González, from Restaurante La Revelia in Amorebieta.

There were also chefs representing the Region of Murcia present, including David López from Local de Ensayo; Joaquín Madrid from El Rincón de Joaquín; Pedro Buitrago from Tándem; and Antonio Velázquez, from El Portillo.

Workshops, tastings, and even children’s activities: An event for the whole family

The grand event included gastronomic presentations, cooking workshops, tastings for tapas, snacks, and wines, concerts, DJ sessions, and children’s activities, all culminating in an event for the whole family to enjoy, and a place where residents and visitors can learn about fine Basque cuisine.

Participating companies and groups

Numerous establishments participated in the organisation of the event, including Maguro Square Sushi, La Gente Restaurante, Ouh! Mami, Bodegas Delampa, Isla Salá Cafetería, La Concha Gastrobar, Arrozaxo, Ostrea Catering, Bodega Undersea, Oceánica, Salazones Valera, La Taxi Burguer, Wai Kai Surf Bar, Amorina Pastelería, Por Derecho Vinos, Ice Monkey Helados and Churrería Bernardo. The well-established event was also made possible by the support of Estrella de Levante and Coca Cola.

A young British man has passed away after smashing into rocks in the Spanish sea in the municipality of Mazarron, located in the southeastern region of Murcia. The man, 25, had gone into cardiac arrest after making impact with rocks on the Percheles Beach.

Horror incident in Spanish holiday hotspot

The tragic incident happened just after 4:00pm on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 10.  A spokesman for the local government-run emergency response coordination centre stated: “We received several 999 calls around 4:05pm yesterday afternoon reporting difficulties in getting a swimmer out of the water at Percheles Beach in Canada de Gallego, part of the municipality of Mazarron. […] According to the callers, two young English men reported that their companion had struck the rocks and was unconscious in the water.”

Emergency services race to the scene, but it is sadly too late for the young man

The young man had been holidaymaking in the popular Spanish town, and was swimming in the sea when the horror incident took place. Two of his companions drew attention to the accident, and locals managed to pull the man out of the water. Emergency responders, including the Guardia Civil, the Mazarron Local Police, the Mazarron Civil Protection, firefighters from the Murcia Region Fire and Rescue Consortium, and an ambulance from the 061 Emergency and Urgent Healthcare Service, raced to the scene. The health professionals present tried to revive him, using the CPR method as well as specialised resuscitation equipment, but they were unable to do so and the man was sadly pronounced dead.

A beach with no lifeguard: A striking and tragic reminder for holidaymakers in Spain

Questions are swirling as to the nature and safety of the beach in which the incident occurred, as well as the lack of a lifeguard on the beach. The beach in question is accessible by an unpaved road, and the closest town to the area is Cañada de Gallego.

The tragic incident has called attention to the importance of being safe while swimming at sea, particularly in secluded beaches. Beaches that do not have a lifeguard, nor access to quick emergency response in the case of an incident, should be avoided if holidaymakers want to swim.

Additionally, as peak season comes into full swing, holidaymakers and locals are reminded that the increase of alcohol consumption, late-night partying, and the holiday mindset could make accidents like these more likely, and that any tourist or resident should exercise caution when swimming, hiking, or doing any other physical activity that may result in injury, especially in low-light conditions or areas where help cannot arrive immediately.

The Costa Calida celebrated the annual Day of the Region of Murcia, one of the most important dates in the social and festival calendar for the southeastern Spanish area. The holiday commemorates the approval of the Region of Murcia’s autonomy in 1982, and since then, has become a key annual celebration, a reminder of Murcia’s self-governance and identity, and a reason to take part in social activities and events.

June 9: The Day of the Region of Murcia, sparking celebrations along the Costa Calida

Across the region, the day, celebrated on Tuesday, June 9, was marked by a vibrant mix of ceremonies, cultural events, and leisure activities, drawing both residents and visitors into the celebrations. Concerts, exhibitions, and gastronomic events were a major highlight of the day, as well as open-air performances in the towns and cities throughout the region. A major concert taking place included the Murcia Lírica concert, in the city of Murcia.

Culture and gastronomy: Major highlights of the day

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to explore the Region of Murcia’s cultural heritage, with many museums, galleries, and attractions opening their doors to residents and visitors for free. These included the Salzillo Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the MUBAM. The day offered a perfect opportunity for newcomers to discover the rich history, art, and traditions of the region, while enjoying a lively community ambience in the streets and plazas.

Gastronomy also played a central role in the celebrations, with local restaurants and bars showcasing the Region of Murcia’s renowned gastronomy. Establishments offered both traditional dishes and quick, savoury tapas, reflecting Murcia’s agricultural roots and Mediterranean gastronomic influences. Some more famous Murcian dishes being offered included zarangollo, michirones, meat pies, and paparajotes. In many places, these offerings were combined with live entertainment and family-friendly activities, making it an ideal day for socialising and enjoying the coastal lifestyle of the area.

Celebrating one of Spain’s most vibrant regions

Ultimately, the Day of the Region of Murcia is both a celebration of identity and a showcase of everything the region has to offer. Whether through music, culture, or cuisine, this special day provides a chance to reflect on Murcia’s past while enjoying the vibrant spirit that defines it today.
