One person tragically lost their life and another sustained serious injuries following a serious head-on crash on the A-7 motorway near Marbella late on Thursday evening.
The incident happened at a high-risk location
Multiple witnesses contacted emergency services after 10.20pm to report a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction on the busy A-7. Minutes later, a frontal collision occurred at kilometre 1044 in the direction of San Pedro de Alcantara. The driver responsible for the wrong-way travel perished at the scene, while the occupant of the other car received medical attention for injuries.
A coordinated rescue operation was launched quickly
Operators at the 112 Andalucia emergency centre immediately dispatched resources from multiple agencies. The 061 health emergencies service sent three units, including a mobile intensive care ambulance. Firefighters, traffic officers from the Guardia Civil, and road maintenance crews also attended the location to free trapped individuals and manage the aftermath. Fire service sources confirmed one fatality on site together with one casualty requiring hospital treatment.
Traffic chaos affected major routes
Police closed affected lanes as crews worked to clear the vehicles and investigate the circumstances. Drivers faced long delays in the area and received advice to select alternative routes until the normal flow resumed. The crash is another example of ongoing concerns about dangerous driving behaviours on this key coastal motorway that serves many local communities and visitors.
Investigation continues into circumstances
The Guardia Civil traffic unit has begun enquiries into the events leading to the wrong-way journey. No more details about the identities or conditions have been released publicly at this stage. Incidents of this nature remain relatively uncommon yet underscore risks associated with momentary lapses or deliberate contraflow driving on high-speed roads.
Traffic police urge all motorists to stay vigilant and report suspicious or erratic behaviour immediately to prevent similar tragedies.
