Residents from up to five different blocks of flats were made to leave their homes in the early hours on Monday, 1 June, after a fire broke out in an underground garage in San Luis de Sabinillas, a coastal area within the Manilva municipality on the Costa del Sol.

Rapid response from 112 emergency teams

Firefighters were alerted by the 112 Andalucia emergency service shortly after 5am to the blaze in the garage on Calle Octavio Paz after a neighbour noticed black smoke billowing out of the garage door. Local police and Guardia Civil officers quickly arrived on the scene and carried out a preventive evacuation of nearby buildings to protect those inside.

Authorities confirmed no exact figure for those temporarily displaced, yet the decisive action made sure of complete safety for everyone involved. Crews from the Malaga Provincial Firefighters Consortium worked efficiently to bring the situation under control by around 5.15am.

Damage limited to three vehicles

The fire damaged three parked cars inside the underground facility. Two vehicles were burnt out completely, while the third suffered only exterior damage. Material losses were confined to these automobiles, with no structural harm reported to the garage or surrounding properties.

No injuries reported in Manilva incident

Emergency services placed strong emphasis on resident protection throughout the operation. Their coordinated efforts prevented any casualties despite the scale of the initial response in this residential coastal neighbourhood.

Investigators have not yet released details on the cause of the fire. Local officials continued to assess the site while residents returned to their homes once safety checks concluded.

The event in San Luis de Sabinillas draws attention to fire risks in underground parking areas common across many Spanish coastal towns. Proper maintenance and quick emergency intervention play essential roles in minimising harm during such occurrences. Communities in Manilva and nearby areas often rely on these well-trained services to handle overnight incidents effectively.

Raquets at the ready as Estepona’s sporting side grows even further, with the addition of two new padel courts being added to its outdoor facilities in the Nueva Atalaya urbanisation. The project, which is already under way, will occupy a plot located between Calle Nueva Atalaya and Avenida Pernet.

What the new works will include

According to the council, the project involves levelling and improving the plot, clearing the land, building the two courts, and installing electricity and rainwater drainage systems. The facilities will cover around 400 m², and the works have been awarded to Equipamientos Deportivos S.A. for €124,503. The contract has a three‑month completion period from the start of construction.

The expansion of the existing sports area

The new courts will be added to the sports area already in place in Nueva Atalaya, which currently holds just one padel court and a multi‑sport pitch used for five‑a‑side football, basketball and other activities. The council notes that the expansion hopes to increase opportunities for physical activity while supporting community cohesion in this eastern district of the town. Additional courts will enable players to create larger padel mixins that prove popular along the coast.

Investment in local sports

The Nueva Atalaya project is just another part of an overall project to improve sports facilities across outlying neighbourhoods. Recent upgrades in Cancelada at the space dedicated to Ignacio Echeverria, the young Spaniard killed while defending victims during the 2017 London terror attack, include a calisthenics park, two petanque courts, and a table tennis table. The existing facility already has a skate park and green areas.

How to book the new courts

The new courts will be bookable through Estepona Council’s online reservation system for local sports facilities, which requires users to register with the Delegacion de Deportes before accessing the booking portal. For more information visit the Estepona Town Hall website.
