George Russell facing humiliating Mercedes demotion as insider claims:

Mercedes star George Russell is facing the very real prospect of a humiliating demotion in his own team according to Sky Sports F1 expert Ralf Schumacher.

The 28-year-old went into the 2026 season as favourite with the oddsmakers to claim his first championship after Mercedes were expected to dominate in the new regulations era.

Everything started perfectly in Melbourne as Russell won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, but since that Sunday in early March things have gone south in a big way.

Russell title bid nosedives<;h2>

The 19-year-old Antonelli has won each of the four races since Australia, and showed he has steel as well as skill during a fiery battle with Russell during the sprint race in Canada recently.

Russell hit a new low a day later in the Canadian Grand Prix when a mechanical failure saw him DNF after 29 laps. He came away from Montreal pointless, exasperated and now 43 points behind Antonelli in the standings.

According to former F1 star and now Sky Germany pundit Schumacher, Russell now risks being relegated to the role of second driver at Mercedes. The pressure is really on as the title race moves on to the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend.

Schumacher fears for Russell Mercedes role

Schumacher believes that the experienced Brit must quickly close the gap on Antonelli, or the team may be forced to intervene and pin their title hopes firmly on the young Italian.

Speaking to the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, he claimed: “Things aren’t going to get easier for Russell from here. He needs to start closing that gap immediately, investing more in himself and on track.”

The pressure is on Russell heading to Monaco this weekend.

Hamilton vs Rosberg 2.0 incoming

The battle between Russell and Antonelli in Montreal led Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to intervene on team radio, and it brought back memories of the brutal battles between former Silver Arrows team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

Schumacher continued: “From where I stand, Barcelona [2016] isn’t that far off. Let’s see if history repeats itself like it did with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton – I suspect these two might eventually clash on the track.”

Will Mercedes demote Russell?

While Mercedes publicly deny having a designated first or second driver, Schumacher believes things might change if their title rivals start to cut the gap.

“If Kimi can maintain his pace for the next three or four races and stay ahead of George, will the team eventually make a decision? ‘Okay, we have our lead driver, let’s finish the season this way?’

“There’s immense potential for this to escalate. One thing is certain: George Russell is extremely frustrated. You could see it when he claimed pole position – he was overjoyed, clearly relishing every moment.”

Toto Wolff knew

Published

on

toto-wolff-knew

An insider, who has spoken to Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff, has revealed just how long the chief has been hyping up Kimi Antonelli’s championship winning potential.

Antonelli was ushered into F1 quite suddenly for a junior driver, having bypassed Formula 3 entirely and finishing the 2024 Formula 2 championship in sixth.

Having endured a rocky European part of the 2025 campaign, there were question marks over whether Antonelli had been promoted too soon. But Wolff retained confidence in his young driver and the Italian’s performances began to improve by the close of the year.

Now, Antonelli sits 43 points ahead of team-mate George Russell, after claiming four consecutive victories in the past four rounds, with the Brit claiming it’s ‘his championship to lose’.

Wolff: Antonelli will become a great champion

While Antonelli was certainly aided by Russell’s DNF to earn such a huge deficit in the drivers’ standings, the youngster has nonetheless started to live up to the hype surrounding him throughout his junior career.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italian entrepreneur Brunello Cucinelli talked all things sport, and revealed a conversation he had with Wolff about young Antonelli.

First, Cucinelli outlined Wolff’s difficulties with pasta, and explained: “I have a wonderful relationship with Toto Wolff: he loves pasta, but it’s bad for him, so I send him pasta made with more refined grains.”

He then added how long Wolff has been celebrating Antonelli as a future world champion, and added: “Already five or six years ago, he was telling me: ‘I have a little gem in my hands, he’ll become a great champion.’

“He [Wolff] has another great quality: he’s always joking and laughing. As long as they don’t make him angry.”

Aston Martin star used a live bug in a matchbox to decide F1 race strategy

Published

Is it time McLaren F1 team invested in their own bug? Perhaps so after their recent tyre strategy disaster at the Canadian Grand Prix.

This was, somewhat, the topic on a recent episode of the High Performance Racing podcast, where Jake Humphrey, former F1 engineer Rob Smedley and ex F1 boss Otmar Szafnauer descended further into madness (in the best possible sense).

The trio were occupied with the fallout from last weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, where wet conditions opened up a variety of tyre strategies for the race start. While teams like Mercedes and Ferrari opted for the slick tyres, McLaren made the bold choice to start on the intermediates.

This was in the event further rain would fall and, if proven correct, could have made the team look like heroes. What transpired, however, was a rapidly drying track and no further rain, a fact Oscar Piastri conveyed to his team on the formation lap.

It was a miserable outing for McLaren in the end, with Piastri finishing P11 after hitting Alex Albon and earning himself a 10-second time penalty, while Lando Norris retired with a gearbox failure.

What’s this all got to do with a bug? Let Otmar Szafnauer explain…

How a bug was used to predict the weather

After discussing McLaren’s tyre strategy blunder, Szafnauer then revealed the unique way in which his former colleague and F1 designer Akio Haga predicted the weather.

Haga has worked in F1 for over two decades, beginning at Jordan in 1998 before it became Spyker and then Force India in 2008, where he was their chief designer.

He then moved to Aston Martin as their chief designer in 2021, later moving into the role of head of trackside liaison and eventually moving across to Aston Martin Performance Technologies as their chief designer.

Szafnauer himself joined Force India in 2009, where he worked alongside Haga, and asked Smedley whether he knew about his race strategy trick – which included a June bug, a matchbox and a weather forecast.

“Was Akio Haga at Jordan when you were there? Akio used to have this little June bug in an old matchbox. And if the June bug was on its back, that meant it was going to rain. And if it wasn’t, it wasn’t raining,” he explained.

Szafnauer then paused so Smedley could get his laughter out, before he asked Szafnauer if the story was real and then if the bug was alive.

To this both Szafnauer and Humphrey delivered a passionate ‘yes’, and the former team boss continued: “So you’d have Mediachance information and Akio Haga information. And then the two of them together.

When asked which was more accurate, Szafnauer said straight-faced: “Akio’s bug.”
