A rising icon of modern soul and funk

lang was born in New Orleans and is known as one of the most compelling voices in modern soul and funk. Raquets at the ready as Estepona’s sporting side grows even further, with the addition of two new padel courts being added to its outdoor facilities in the Nueva Atalaya urbanisation. The project, which is already under way, will occupy a plot located between Calle Nueva Atalaya and Avenida Pernet.

What the new works will include

According to the council, the project involves levelling and improving the plot, clearing the land, building the two courts, and installing electricity and rainwater drainage systems. The facilities will cover around 400 m², and the works have been awarded to Equipamientos Deportivos S.A. for €124,503. The contract has a three‑month completion period from the start of construction.

The expansion of the existing sports area

The new courts will be added to the sports area already in place in Nueva Atalaya, which currently holds just one padel court and a multi‑sport pitch used for five‑a‑side football, basketball and other activities. The council notes that the expansion hopes to increase opportunities for physical activity while supporting community cohesion in this eastern district of the town. Additional courts will enable players to create larger padel mixins that prove popular along the coast.

Investment in local sports

The Nueva Atalaya project is just another part of an overall project to improve sports facilities across outlying neighbourhoods. Recent upgrades in Cancelada at the space dedicated to Ignacio Echeverria, the young Spaniard killed while defending victims during the 2017 London terror attack, include a calisthenics park, two petanque courts, and a table tennis table. The existing facility already has a skate park and green areas.

How to book the new courts

The new courts will be bookable through Estepona Council’s online reservation system for local sports facilities, which requires users to register with the Delegacion de Deportes before accessing the booking portal. For more information visit the Estepona Town Hall website.

Estepona will host its inaugural Patchwork event on Saturday, June 6, bringing together craft enthusiasts from across the region for a day dedicated entirely to textile art. The event is organised by Lola’s Haberdashery (Merceria Lola), in collaboration with Estepona Town Hall, and will be held at the Estepona Exhibition and Congress Centre (Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos) from 12pm to 7pm. The charity bar will be run by Paula and the Bone Marrow Factory Association (Paula y la Fabrica de Medula), a local group supporting bone‑marrow donation.

What to expect at the event

Three areas will be set up inside the venue, a working zone for registered participants, an exhibition area, and a catering zone featuring the charity bar. Visitors can browse the displays and enjoy the creative atmosphere throughout the afternoon at no cost.

How to register for the Estepona Patchwork day

Participation is limited to 100 places. Registration is available by calling 649 732 491. The €50 fee includes a materials kit, lunch, gifts, and entry into prize draws. Bookings remain open until all places are filled, so early registration is recommended.

What is Patchwork? The benefits of textile arts and crafts

Patchwork, or “work with patches” is a traditional hand‑sewing technique that joins small pieces of fabric in different colours, patterns, and textures to create a larger decorative design. It is commonly used for quilts, cushions, garments, and accessories.

It’s not only creative appeal that attracts people, the craft supports sustainability by reusing leftover fabric scraps, encourages mental wellbeing through its rhythmic, meditative process, and fosters community by bringing people together around a shared hobby.

Free entry to Estepona’s textile gathering

If you are an experienced needle worker and would like to take part, or simply curious about textile arts and want to give it a go or have a browse, this event is for you to get the creative juices flowing.

Mark June 6 in your diary and head to the venue for a day of something different, creativity, community, and colour.
