Kindhearted volunteers from local charity HELP Murcia Mar Menor were recently hit by a tragedy: the organisation’s membership secretary, Paul Gaynor, suffered a devastating brain aneurysm on April 13, and his family as well as friends from the charity are rallying together to help cover the costs of his treatment. The family has set up a GoFundMe for the cause, and every little bit helps.

A friend and neighbour suffers a devastating blow

Paul and his wife, Penny, were active volunteers at the HELP Murcia Mar Menor charity, and helped with the outlet located in San Javier. They had just arrived in Spain to begin their retirement after dedicating a combined 75 years to the NHS as mental health nurses, but tragically, shortly after landing, Paul suffered a catastrophic brain aneurysm at the airport.

Since that day, Paul has undergone three major brain surgeries, and doctors told the family he was unlikely to survive. However, against all odds, Paul has fought back, and is now in a rehabilitation hospital in Spain.

Paul’s arduous road to recovery and rehabilitation

The brain injury has left him with disabilities and needing round-the-clock care. According to the medical team overseeing him, he is unlikely to regain his ability to walk or speak properly. Now, doctors have recommended that his family bring him home to England, but unfortunately, due to the severity of Paul’s condition, he cannot travel on a commercial flight and will need either a specialist ambulance journey across Europe or an air ambulance, both of which come at an enormous cost.

“Once he returns home, he and my mother-in-law will be moving into our family home so that we can care for them together. We want them to be surrounded by love, familiarity and support during this incredibly difficult time,” stated Paul’s family.

Bringing a dedicated caregiver back home to his loved ones

The family is asking for donations to help cover £9,000 (some €10,500) of the significant costs of the specialist medical transport from Spain to the UK, essential medical equipment and care needs, and ongoing costs associated with Paul’s rehabilitation and daily care, as well as adaptations to their home in order to make it safe and accessible for Paul.

How the community is rallying to help

“Asking for help is not easy,” stated the family in the GoFundMe’s description, “but after a lifetime spent caring for others, we hope people will now help care for him. Whether you are able to donate or simply share this page, every act of kindness brings us one step closer to bringing him home where he belongs.”

HELP Murcia Mar Menor has already donated €500 to the cause, but are urging interested and kindhearted donors to contribute to the GoFundMe or spread the word in order to help a longtime volunteer, a caring nurse, and a kindhearted neighbour.

Local Costa Calida charity, HELP Murcia Mar Menor, has recently completed another delivery of essential supplies to RedMadre, a charity dedicated to helping struggling mothers in the municipality of Cartagena. The charity sent a van loaded with vital supplies to support more than two dozen local mothers in vulnerable situations.

Essential supplies for mothers in need

The delivery included a haul of practical and essential items for new mothers: more than 1,500 nappies, nearly 30 packs of wet wipes, and five tins of powdered milk, as well as bags of children’s clothes, toys, and nursery equipment. All these items have been generously donated by residents of the Costa Calida, specifically at the HELP Murcia Mar Menor main outlet in San Javier.

Some of the more touching items delivered to the vulnerable mothers included hand-crocheted blankets and cardigans, each crafted by the charity’s dedicated team of volunteer knitters.

Handcrafted care from local volunteers

Many of the essential items were collected during the HELP Murcia Mar Menor monthly fundraising lunch, which took place in June. Attendees were asked to bring items for babies rather than traditional donations. Local donor Diane got a special mention from the charity organisers, as she has made continuous and generous contributions of children’s items to the organisation.

RedMadre is estimated to go through thousands of nappies per month, meaning that each donation is profoundly impactful and appreciated.

A community united by fundraising and generosity

Debbie, the president of HELP Murcia Mar Menor, emphasised that these donations happen every few months and are only possible due to the unrelenting generosity of donors and the hard work of local volunteers. Founded in 2002, HELP Murcia Mar Menor operates entirely on public donations and fundraising efforts.

Proving their wide-reaching community impact, the organisation also separately donated €1,000 this month to the “Forget Me Not” day care and respite charity in Camposol, which helps a range of people with health conditions but especially those with dementia. The charity also pledged an additional €1,000 for them, to be turned in this coming December.

Los Alcazares is set to celebrate diversity on the shores of the Mar Menor with the return of its annual Pride celebration. Running from Monday, July 6 to Saturday, July 11, this third edition of “El Mar Menor vibra con Orgullo” promises nearly a week of events dedicated to the LGTBIQ+ community, equality, and respect.

Star-studded line-up at Plaza de la Feria

The main stage at Plaza de la Feria will host as many as 30 diverse acts throughout the week. Acclaimed artists Nebulossa and Malena Gracia will top the star-studded bill, alongside popular performers like Satín Greco, Le Cocó, Pitita, Kuve, and Keunam.

The festival’s major highlights begin on Thursday, July 9, with the Gala Míster Orgullo del Mar Menor. This is followed on Friday by the colorful Gala Divas y Reinas. The celebrations reach their peak on Saturday, July 11, starting with a lively parade along the seafront at 19:00, marching from Plaza del Espejo to Plaza de la Feria.

Following the march, Mayor Mario Pérez Cervera and the “Lo tienes claro?” Association will deliver a pride manifesto, setting the stage for an opening speech and a massive closing gala, featuring unforgettable musical performances.

Highlighting health and advocacy on the coast

In addition to the fun aspect of the event, it will also have another main focus: public health. All day on July 10, and in the morning of July 11, organisers will provide quick, confidential, and free HIV tests at the Town Hall, available for anyone who wants to take one.

Local businesses along the Los Alcazares promenade are also actively participating, with many hosting themed events, decorative displays, and special promotions to welcome the influx of international and local visitors.

This vibrant coastal celebration will successfully blend high-energy entertainment with important advocacy, welcoming residents and visitors to honour equality and have fun together. Organisers suggest that anyone interested in attending arrive early to the event, and enjoy one of the most colourful and fun celebrations in the town’s local summer calendar.
