If you live alone with a dog, cat or another animal, there is one frightening question you may never have considered: what happens to them if you are suddenly taken to hospital and nobody knows they are waiting at home? A simple card kept inside your wallet or purse could make sure they are not forgotten.

Pet owners are being urged to carry an emergency card stating that they have an animal at home, together with the information someone would need to make sure it is looked after if its owner is unable to return.  The idea is particularly important for people who live alone with their pets. If an accident leaves you unconscious, you are taken away by ambulance or you are unexpectedly admitted to hospital, the people treating you may have no reason to know that a dog, cat or other animal is sitting behind your front door waiting for you.

The small card with a very important job

The emergency card is designed to fit into a wallet alongside your bank cards or driving licence. It should clearly state that there is an unattended animal at home and provide enough information for someone to arrange immediate care. At a minimum, owners should include their name and address, the type of animal they have and the name of the pet. A trusted emergency contact who can get into the property and take responsibility for the animal should also be listed. For animals with additional needs, the card can contain information that could be vital if somebody else suddenly has to take over their care.

That could include medication, allergies, ongoing medical conditions, mobility problems, dietary requirements and the name and contact details of a friend or the animal’s veterinary practice. The aim is to give someone enough information to act quickly if needed. Spanish pet organisations have already promoted wallet-sized versions of this type of card. Wamiz España and Purina, for example, provide a downloadable emergency card specifically designed to be carried in a wallet and used if the owner suffers an accident or needs emergency hospital treatment.

What happens if nobody knows about your pet?

It is easy to assume that someone will eventually realise there is an animal at home. That may not happen. A person living alone could be taken from work, the street or their car without being able to tell anyone where they live or that they have animals. If they are unconscious or seriously injured, even their mobile phone may be inaccessible. Meanwhile, the animal could be waiting at home without food, water or medication.

This is especially worrying for pets that rely on medication at particular times of the day. A dog with a heart condition, a cat receiving regular treatment or an older animal with health problems could become seriously unwell if nobody reaches them. An emergency card does not need to contain a huge amount of information. A clear message such as “I have a pet alone at home”, followed by the owner’s address and emergency contact details and medication the animal needs, may be enough to alert somebody to the problem.

Keep the information easy to find

The card needs to be somewhere emergency personnel are likely to find it. A wallet or purse is useful because it is normally carried with the owner and can be checked for identification and emergency information. Owners can also make the same information available elsewhere, such as through an emergency contact on their phone, a note attached to their keys or information left somewhere accessible at home. The important thing is that the details are kept up to date. If the emergency contact moves, changes their telephone number or can no longer look after the animal, the card should be replaced.

Owners should also make sure the person listed actually knows they have been nominated and has access to the animal if necessary. For something that takes only a few minutes to prepare, the card could make a considerable difference during an emergency. You may not be able to tell anyone about the animal waiting at home, so make sure the information can speak for you.

Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, the state organization responsible for licensing lotteries in Spain, confirmed the winning El Millón code as GKH34441. Unlike the main Euromillones jackpot, El Millón is a separate €1 million prize available exclusively to tickets played in Spain.

A single ticket matched all five main numbers and both Lucky Stars to claim €28,871,634. The winning ticket was validated at Receptor No. 69,930 on El Sol, 11, in Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria. Malaga’s winner did not need to match the main Euromillones combination to claim the El Millón prize.

Gibraltar Cigarette Prices Soar By Up To 46%

Gibraltar has delivered a hefty shock to tobacco shoppers, with minimum prices rising by as much as 46 per cent and potentially changing the economics of the traditional cross-border shopping trip.

The latest Gibraltar Gazette has introduced new minimum retail prices for packets of 20 cigarettes, with increases ranging from 23 per cent to 46 per cent depending on the category. The changes came into effect on October 1. The biggest jump is for Mid-High cigarettes, where the minimum price has risen from £3.20 to £4.68 per packet, an increase of more than 46 per cent. Premium cigarettes have gone from £4.20 to £5.44, a 29.5 per cent increase. Mid-Ordinary cigarettes have risen from £3 to £3.69, while Ordinary cigarettes have increased from £2.70 to £3.35. The figures were reported by GBC and are set out in Gibraltar’s latest tobacco legislation.

Gibraltar’s cheap tobacco advantage takes a hit

The increases could prove particularly important for shoppers from Spain, as cheap tobacco has traditionally been one of the reasons people make the journey across the border to Gibraltar.

A packet that previously cost a minimum of £2.70 in the cheapest category now costs £3.35. At the other end of the scale, the minimum for Premium cigarettes has jumped by £1.24 per packet.

That does not mean every packet sold in Gibraltar will suddenly cost these exact amounts. The figures are minimum retail prices, meaning shops cannot sell cigarettes in the relevant categories below the amounts set by the Gibraltar Government.

The latest increases therefore raise a bigger question for Gibraltar’s shopping trade: how attractive will the Rock remain to people making a special trip to buy tobacco? It is too early to say that shopping habits have changed, but the price difference that has helped make tobacco attractive to cross-border shoppers is clearly being squeezed.

New rules link Gibraltar prices to Spain

The increases are not simply a decision by Gibraltar to make cigarettes more expensive. They are part of the new arrangements introduced following the UK-EU agreement concerning Gibraltar and the associated customs agreement between Spain and the UK.

Under the new system, Gibraltar must operate a price-differential mechanism for cigarettes. The difference in retail price between Gibraltar and Spain cannot exceed €0.80 or 15 per cent per packet, with the lower differential applying. The system continues to divide cigarettes into four categories.

Gibraltar had already explained that its new system would involve quarterly adjustments to minimum cigarette prices. The Government said prices would be changed if Spanish tobacco prices or exchange rates moved, allowing the Gibraltar minimums to be kept within the limits required by the agreement. That means October’s increases are not necessarily the end of the story.

More changes could follow

The new framework also changed the way tobacco is taxed in Gibraltar. From July 14, different excise rates began applying to the four cigarette categories, while a 15 per cent Transaction Tax is also applied to the relevant tobacco transactions. Gibraltar’s Government said the changes were designed to meet the objectives of the treaty and increase government revenue.

The tobacco-price mechanism is therefore likely to become a regular feature of life on the Rock rather than a one-off increase. For Spanish residents and visitors who have long regarded Gibraltar as a place to pick up cheaper cigarettes, that could make the difference between a tobacco purchase being an obvious bargain and one that is simply a little cheaper than buying in Spain.

Is Gibraltar’s bargain-shopping era changing?

The new prices do not mean Gibraltar is suddenly losing its appeal as a shopping destination. The Rock has many other attractions, and the new arrangements are also designed to make movement between Gibraltar and the EU easier in several respects.

But tobacco has been a particularly visible part of Gibraltar’s cross-border shopping economy, and a 46 per cent increase in one cigarette category is difficult to ignore. With prices now linked more closely to those in Spain, shoppers could see further changes whenever Spanish tobacco prices or the pound-euro exchange rate move.

For anyone crossing the border mainly because cigarettes are cheaper on the Rock, the calculation has therefore changed considerably.

And with the new system requiring Gibraltar to keep cigarette prices within an agreed distance of Spanish prices, the days when tobacco provided a particularly large saving could be coming under increasing pressure.
