Costa del Sol residents are being invited to swap their usual morning routine for a five-kilometre charity walk in Benalmadena on Thursday, October 15, helping raise awareness of the daily struggle faced by millions without safe drinking water.

The fourth annual Walkathon for Water will start at 10am from Sahara Sunset on Avenida Rocío Jurado, with participants following the seafront towards Puerto Marina before returning to the resort.

Organised by the We Are Water Foundation with Royal Oasis Club at Pueblo Quinta and Sahara Sunset, both managed by Hilton Grand Vacations, the event uses the five-kilometre distance to represent the journey many children make every day to find water.

Walking the distance many children face

According to the We Are Water Foundation, more than two billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water. Many children in Africa, Asia and Latin America walk several kilometres each day to collect water for their families.

Participants in Benalmadena will therefore be turning an everyday walk into a reminder of a very different reality for communities around the world.

Money raised during this year’s international Walkathon programme will support two water projects in India and Mexico, with the work expected to improve access to clean water for more than 5,000 people. The Benalmadena event is one of 20 Walkathons being held across eight countries during 2026.

How to join the Benalmadena walk

The five-kilometre route is expected to take between one hour and 90 minutes and is open to people who want to support the cause.

Registration can be completed online through the Walkathon for Water section of the We Are Water Foundation website, with a minimum donation of €5 per person. People can also register at the event itself.

The walk starts and finishes at Sahara Sunset, Avenida Rocío Jurado, Benalmadena Costa, at 10am.

Afterwards, participants can stay for paella, sangria and a raffle from 1pm.
For registration and full event details, visit the We Are Water Foundation website.

Ryanair Adds New Barcelona Route This Winter

Planning a winter break from Barcelona? Ryanair is adding a new destination and expanding its service to several popular European cities. But despite this expansion of its winter schedule, the carrier will keep its overall capacity constant, despite the rising cost of jet fuel which is putting increasing pressure on the industry.

In the season from late October 2026 to the end of March 2027, the airline will operate 53 routes out of Barcelona-El Prat, among them a new connection with Poznań, Poland. There will be three flights a week.

Passengers travelling to Venice, Naples, Kraków, Porto and Budapest will also be able to take advantage of the additional flights that will give them more opportunities for departure when they plan a winter vacation or visit their relatives abroad.

Vueling, which is the largest at the airport, is still to dominate. Almost three times as many seats will be available on it than on Ryanair.

The latest schedules available for passengers comparing flight offers during the winter season provide information on where more choice is being offered, which new routes are being established, and why prices continue to fluctuate.

Ryanair Barcelona winter flights: new Poznań route and more European connections

This winter Ryanair will be offering 3.6 million seats across 53 different routes, matching the capacity and number of routes offered during the previous winter season.

The most important thing for passengers is the new line from Barcelona to Poznań, which is going to be operating three times a week. Poznań in Poland joins Ryanair’s existing network from El Prat, while several established European destinations will receive additional services.

It has been announced that the airline will increase its services on about twenty routes, including Venice, Naples, Kraków, Porto and Budapest.

Poland and Italy are among the biggest beneficiaries.

In addition, Ryanair is increasing its capacity on routes to Poland by 9%, and to Italy by 31%, so giving more choice to passengers who want to go from Barcelona to these destinations.

For a holiday-maker, additional departures make it easier to find flights that suit the long weekend or days off work. The new route, however, will not lead to cheaper tickets. The fare will be set according to supply and demand, availability and date of travel.

In spite of these changes to individual routes, the overall structure of the Ryanair Barcelona operation remains unchanged.

The expected number of passengers carried by the company in the current winter season amounts to about 9.3 million, the same figure as last winter. It will also continue to operate 14 aircraft based at Barcelona-El Prat, an investment that is estimated to be worth approximately $1.4 billion (€1.25 billion).

At a time when the whole industry is being put under pressure by rising fuel prices and by delays in deliveries of new aircraft, the decision to maintain overall capacity was a welcome one.

Vueling vs Ryanair at Barcelona Airport: which airline offers more winter flights?

Although Ryanair has bolstered its presence in several European destinations, Vueling remains by far the largest air carrier at Barcelona-El Prat.

The Spanish carrier, a part of the International Airlines Group (IAG), is offering from Barcelona, during the winter season of 2026-2027, approximately 10 million seats to about 90 destinations.Of those, 5.4 million seats are allocated to international routes.

Ryanair, by comparison, is offering 3.6 million seats across 53 routes.

The difference is of particular importance for passengers who are looking for a direct flight.

Vueling, with its wider range, offers more choice to the traveller, whereas on some routes, increased frequency might enable them to catch a later flight to Italy, Poland or Portugal. Both have been fairly cautious about the overall winter capacity, without expanding the network out of El Prat.

The situation is different at Madrid-Barajas Airport. Ryanair is increasing its winter capacity in Madrid by 6 per cent, adding approximately 200,000 seats, to an estimated total of 3.4 million seats.

By this time, the company will be serving 51 routes from Madrid, as compared to 53 from Barcelona. And it will have 14 aircraft based at each airport.

These figures show how closely these two Spanish airports are occupied by Ryanair and Vueling, although Vueling maintains a considerable lead in the market in Barcelona.

In Spain as a whole, however, Ryanair is still the main carrier in terms of both passengers and available seat capacity.

What Ryanair’s Barcelona winter schedule means for travellers

For passengers, the biggest change is more choice on selected European routes rather than a major expansion at Barcelona Airport.

The new three-times-weekly service to Poznań adds another direct destination, while increased frequencies to Venice, Naples, Kraków, Porto and Budapest could give travellers greater flexibility when choosing departure dates and times.

However, Ryanair is keeping its overall Barcelona capacity at 3.6 million seats, unchanged from last winter. That means the additional flights on some routes do not represent an overall increase in seats from El Prat.

There is also no guarantee that the extra frequencies will mean cheaper fares. Airlines continue to face higher fuel costs, with Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary warning that the industry could face elevated costs for more than a year.

Estepona has major sporting goals planned for 2027, a game in the morning and warm swim in the afternoon is closer than you think, with a new complex just round the corner.

Contract signed for a heated indoor pool and racket sports complex

Estepona town hall has signed the contract to build and run a new sports complex in the Camino de las Mesas area, sitting between Calle Pases Bajos, Calle Francia and Avenida Puerta del Mar. Building work is expected to begin in early 2027.

Plans cover a brand new heated indoor pool with tiered seating, 17 padel courts, two tennis courts and two petanca pitches. Changing rooms, toilets and offices are also included, along with parking for 80 vehicles.

The company building the complex has proposed fitting solar panels, or a similar renewable system, to cover at least half of the site’s electricity needs. Garden areas will be planted with species chosen to need little water and minimal maintenance.

Discounts for residents and local swimmers

Anyone registered on the town’s padron will pay 20% less to use the facilities. A separate agreement will let members of the Club de Natacion de Estepona, (the local swimming club), train in the new pool.

Two free padel courts over in Nueva Atalaya

Also just round the corner, two new free padel courts opened on Thursday, October 8 in Nueva Atalaya, joining an existing padel court and a multi-sport court used for five-a-side football and basketball. San Cristobal residents’ association organised a free tournament to celebrate the opening of the new facilities.

Now there are no excuses not to stay active, both projects form part of the council’s drive to bring sport to outlying neighbourhoods and widen free access. For those living in the area, it means more chances to keep fit, have fun and make new friends. For more information on the new facilities see the Estepona Town Hall website.

Car Flies Over Marbella Roundabout And Ends Upside Down Against Flats

Flying car crash lands narrowly missing bus stop. Credit: MsQ FB

A high-speed smash in central Marbella left a car airborne before it slammed into a residential block and finished upside down, yet luckily nobody died.

The incident took place at dusk on Friday evening on Calle Jacinto Benavente near the junction with Calle Valentuñana. A vehicle travelling at considerable speed failed to negotiate a small roundabout, struck a large planted pot and launched roughly four metres into the air. It then sheared through a mature palm tree, narrowly missed a glass bus shelter and ploughed into the front of Edificio Ami, a multi-storey apartment building. The car came to rest overturned against the façade, although the building stayed relatively undamaged.

Emergency services clear the scene

Local police, firefighters and emergency crews reached the location quickly. Officers cordoned off the area while recovery teams used a crane to lift the badly damaged SUV clear of the building. Social media images shared by MsQ on social media show the vehicle heavily damaged, although more or less in one piece, and police tape securing the site. According to initial reports from the scene, no fatalities have been confirmed. Police sources stated that nobody died, although the force of the impact made serious injuries or worse, a very real possibility.

Witnesses described the sequence as extraordinary. After hitting the roundabout, the car became airborne, clipped vegetation and street decoration, which clearly made the mini roundabout visible, and then struck the palm before the final collision with the flats. The force was enough to leave the vehicle inverted against the wall of Edificio Ami.

Recent pattern of serious crashes in the town

This latest incident follows a series of high-profile accidents reported across Marbella in recent months. In May, a wrong-way driver died in a head-on collision on the A-7 motorway near the town. Earlier this week, concrete balcony slabs collapsed onto a busy central street without causing injuries. Last year a Land Rover also crashed into a barbershop terrace in Nueva Andalucia, hospitalising two people. Local authorities continue to monitor road safety on both urban streets and the surrounding motorway network.

Residents in the area have expressed relief that the outcome was not worse. Further details about the driver, possible causes or any minor injuries have not yet been released by police or the 112 emergency service. Investigators are expected to examine speed, the condition of the roundabout and any contributing factors.
