‘Swallow’ Warning Unlicensed Botox

They book high-end hotel suites, blast Instagram with bargain deals, and send you the treatment address just 60 minutes before your appointment. Doctors in Malaga are raising the alarm over a dangerous trend of “fly-in” Botox operators vanishing as quickly as they arrive.

Aesthetic doctors in the province have nicknamed these operators the “golondrinas” (swallows) of Botox. They advertise on Instagram and TikTok, fill their diaries for a day or two, then disappear. They are not doctors. The Asociacion de Medicina Estetica de Malaga (Medesma) describes the problem as one of public health and reports a sharp rise along the Costa del Sol in injectable treatments carried out by people with no medical qualification or professional registration, outside authorised health centres.

Hotel rooms, villas and hair salons

Treatments take place in hair salons, flats, garages, hotel rooms and luxury villas. Javier Romero, an aesthetic doctor and Medesma’s board member for professional intrusion, says the association recently came close to catching two operators in Marbella. One organised appointments in a well-known five-star hotel, while the other rented a luxury villa, with venues themselves usually having no idea what is going on.

Clients often learn the location only an hour to ninety minutes beforehand, which makes any follow-up near impossible. Once the practitioner has left, there is no consulting room to return to if a complication arises, and complications can range from minor irritations to blindness to even death.

Fridges, garages and facial paralysis

Romero describes a patient who arrived at his surgery with a facial abscess after treatment in a garage, where a portable couch was set up once the car had been driven out. The Guardia Civil later found the fillers kept in a domestic fridge, among cans of beer and fruit. Large syringes of hyaluronic acid meant for the body had been decanted into smaller ones for use on the face, which Romero says is completely forbidden.

Another woman had Botox injected into her jaw to treat teeth grinding and was left with facial paralysis that pulled her mouth sideways when she smiled. She later discovered that her practitioner was a nurse, not a doctor. She had been misled, as the treatment took place in an apparently genuine clinic. Medesma is also following a case in Benalmadena in which non-medical staff used a CO2 laser, which Romero says caused serious injuries and hospital admissions.

Police operations and years in court

Guardia Civil officers investigated 24 clinics and establishments last year, including several in Malaga, as part of an operation against a network distributing Botox and other illegal products, mainly from South Korea. Across the operation, searches included a property in San Pedro de Alcantara, and 700 vials of botulinum toxin were among the items seized. More recently, EWN reported on nine arrests and more than 10,000 doses of illegal Botox seized back in May, read the full article here.

Medesma is following around six court cases at various stages and works with lawyers and private detectives. One detective used a hidden camera in a handbag to record how she was about to be given botulinum toxin in a flat. Romero says each trial costs the association an average of €7,000 to €8,000, and proceedings can last up to eight or ten years.

Pirate Botox, the prices that do not add up

Romero warns that toxin from South Korea or China can be bought online outside the authorised pharmaceutical channels, with no guarantee of how it was transported or stored. In his words, it is delivered to your home without any cold-chain controls. His price test is very straight forward, the product alone costs about €150, so nobody offering Botox for €180 is providing a legal treatment.

How to protect yourself

Medesma advises patients to check the following before anyone treats their face:

Registration number: ask for the doctor’s collegiate (professional registration) number.
Authorisation: confirm the centre holds health authorisation and a U.48 aesthetic medicine unit.
Offers: be wary of oversized promotions. Two-for-one deals, discounts for bringing someone along and Black Friday campaigns are not permitted for these treatments.
Location: Not knowing the location of where a treatment will be carried out raises serious red flags.

The Field Club of Fuengirola offers two walks a week, with routes to suit different fitness levels for just €15 a year.

Residents looking to discover more of inland Malaga Province are being invited to join the Field Club of Fuengirola, a walking group that combines outdoor exercise with the chance to make new friends.

Just a short drive from the Costa del Sol’s busy resorts, the countryside offers rivers, farmland, forests and hills to explore on foot. The club organises two walks each week, with different distances and levels of difficulty to suit a range of abilities.

People with a reasonable level of fitness and suitable footwear should be able to find a route that suits them, whether they are keen walkers or simply want to spend more time outdoors.

Explore Andalucia for €15 a year

Annual membership costs just €15, giving walkers an affordable way to discover the landscapes beyond the coast while enjoying the company of other members.

Those interested in joining can sign up through the club’s website at thefieldclub.org, or come along to meet members at one of its monthly coffee mornings.

Where to meet the Field Club

The coffee mornings take place on the first Monday of every month in Los Boliches, close to the train station. Visitors should look for the Tenencia de Alcaldia building, which also houses the local market. The group meets upstairs in the cafeteria between 10.30am and 11.30am. It is an opportunity to find out more about the walks, ask questions about the routes and meet some of the people who take part before deciding to join.

The club’s motto sums up its approach: “Where walkers make friends and friends go walking.”

For anyone living on the Costa del Sol who would like to get out into the countryside, enjoy regular exercise and expand their social circle, the Field Club of Fuengirola is inviting them to take the first step.
