easyJet announces six new UK-Spain flights for 2027, with fares from £35

Liverpool and Aberdeen have never had a direct flight to Girona, Murcia or Barcelona, but that’s about to change. easyJet has just confirmed six new Spain routes for summer 2027, four of them genuinely new to any airline, with fares starting from just £35 (€40.70).

Liverpool becomes the only UK city flying direct to Girona and Murcia

Liverpool passengers have never had a nonstop option to either Girona or Murcia, and reaching Costa Brava (Spain’s rugged north-eastern coastline) or the sunny south-east has meant connecting through Barcelona or Madrid instead. That changes from March 28 2027, when easyJet’s new Liverpool to Girona service takes off twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays, with fares starting from £43.48 (€50.55). 

The Murcia route follows a day later, on March 29, flying Mondays and Fridays from £42.98 (€49.97). No other airline currently flies either city pair, so both give passengers across the north-west of England something genuinely new rather than just another option alongside existing services. The Liverpool to Girona route alone is expected to carry around 9,000 seats in its first season.

The UK is already the country with the most connections to Girona airport, and the president of Girona’s provincial council welcomed the expansion as a chance to “diversify, not to depend exclusively on one or two companies, but to have a range of them”, while also spreading visitor numbers beyond the peak summer months. 

Paul Winfield, Liverpool John Lennon Airport’s director of aviation development, said easyJet was “continuing to expand the choice available for passengers from Liverpool”, adding that both new services “will give passengers from across the north-west and north Wales even more opportunities to reach popular destinations in Spain direct from Liverpool.”

The Murcia route lands in a region already leaning heavily on British visitors. In the first seven months of 2026 alone, the UK sent 229,578 tourists to the Región de Murcia, up 7.3 per cent on the same period in 2025 and worth €290.6 million in spending, or nearly 30 per cent of all the region’s international tourist income. Regional tourism minister Carmen Conesa called the new route “a new advance to expand connectivity” for a market that already accounts for close to a third of the region’s foreign tourist spending.

Aberdeen gets its first-ever direct flight to Barcelona

Aberdeen’s new routes are arguably the boldest move in the whole announcement. From March 31 2027, easyJet will fly twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, to Barcelona, with fares from £38.49 (€44.75), marking what Jonathan Ford, portfolio manager at AGS Airports (which runs Aberdeen Airport), called “the first time the city has been served directly from Aberdeen.”

Ford described the move as “particularly exciting”, and it’s easy to see why. Cataluña’s capital, home to the Sagrada Família and FC Barcelona, is one of the most visited cities in Spain, yet north-east Scotland has had to reach it via Edinburgh, Glasgow or London until now. Aberdeen’s only existing direct links to Spain are Ryanair’s routes to Alicante and Málaga, so easyJet’s arrival is also the airline’s first Spanish service from the airport.

A second new Aberdeen route lands in Mallorca 

Aberdeen isn’t stopping at Barcelona. A twice-weekly service to Mallorca begins on May 3 2027, flying Thursdays and Sundays, with fares from just £35.48 (€41.25), the cheapest of all six new routes. Like Barcelona, no airline currently flies this route direct, so it doubles Aberdeen’s number of Spanish destinations from two to four in one announcement.

Kevin Doyle, easyJet’s UK country manager, said the airline’s “Spanish network is greatly expanding with six new routes from the UK, including Girona for the first time”, and Jonathan Ford called Barcelona and Mallorca “proven favourites with UK holidaymakers” now within easy reach of the north-east of Scotland. 

Edinburgh’s new Bilbao service brings a low-cost rival to an existing route

Edinburgh’s addition is a little different. Vueling already flies passengers between Edinburgh and Bilbao, the industrial and cultural capital of the Basque Country and home to the Guggenheim museum, so this isn’t a brand new city pair. What it does bring, from March 30 2027, is easyJet’s first presence on the route, flying twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays with fares from £45.48 (€52.88).

That still matters for passengers, though. Doyle called Scotland “always… an important market for easyJet”, and a second airline on any route usually means more seats and more competitive fares rather than one operator setting the price alone.

Gatwick’s Girona flight adds a budget rival to Jet2

The same pattern holds at Gatwick. Jet2 has flown Gatwick to Girona twice weekly since opening its Gatwick base in November 2025, so easyJet’s new service, starting June 3 2027 with three flights a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from £49.48 (€57.53), is a second option rather than a new link as well. 

Even so, it’s a meaningful one. The Gatwick service is expected to carry around 8,000 seats in its first year, and having a genuine low-cost alternative to Jet2 should help keep fares honest for anyone heading to Costa Brava’s beaches and medieval old town without wanting to land in Barcelona first and travel on by road or rail.

What this adds up to for passengers

It’s worth asking, with any route announcement, whether ‘new’ really means new or just another airline joining an existing route. Here, it splits down the middle. Four of the six routes, Liverpool to Girona, Liverpool to Murcia, Aberdeen to Barcelona and Aberdeen to Mallorca, have no existing direct competitor at all and are genuinely new routes. The other two, Edinburgh to Bilbao and Gatwick to Girona, add easyJet as a second, lower-cost option on routes Vueling and Jet2 already fly.

Either way, the airline isn’t a small player testing the water. easyJet now carries more than 100 million passengers a year, flying more than 350 aircraft across more than 1,200 routes in 35 countries, and all 18 of its new routes for summer 2027 are already on sale, with package holidays available for those who want flights and accommodation bundled together.

Given how far ahead the launch dates sit, booking early is likely to be the best way to catch the lowest of these opening fares before they rise closer to departure.
