on

The biggest wildfire on the Costa del Sol so far this season has broken out near Selwo Aventura. Residents in Estepona face serious dangers after reports of a wildfire near Selwo on Thursday. Fire services responded quickly with two fire copters already over the blaze which may have started in a ditch and is currently threatening some properties. Very high fire risk remains in place with temperatures reaching 36 degrees.

Current fire details in Estepona

Authorities confirmed a notable incident close to the Selwo area. Local observers shared images of flames while no large scale alert came from regional plans yet. Dry conditions in peak summer fuel rapid spread of such fires. Provincial firefighters are handling multiple calls in the municipality.

Health risks from smoke exposure

Smoke from the fire creates breathing difficulties for many people and threatening the animals housed at the zoo facilities. Fine particles irritate lungs and eyes while worsening asthma and similar conditions. Children older adults and heart patients require extra protection. Air quality currently sits at moderate levels though local smoke can raise risks quickly. Experts advise staying inside with windows closed and wearing masks if going out.

Challenges around Selwo Safari Park

Selwo Aventura holds thousands of animals with large species difficult to relocate during emergencies. Past fires forced evacuation of hundreds of visitors and staff from the park plus nearby cabins. Human safety takes priority in these scenarios. Proximity to forests and homes adds pressure on teams when flames near tourist attractions.

Lessons from previous blazes

Earlier incidents near Estepona led to road closures and moves for communities. Strong winds accelerate fire movement across hillsides often. A major 2021 event affected residential zones and caused anxiety for evacuees. Preparation proves essential for locals and visitors during fire prone seasons.

Steps to stay safe during the alert

People should monitor official channels such as emergency number 112 for updates. Follow evacuation orders immediately and prepare essential items ahead. Limit outdoor activity for vulnerable groups. Check protection services regularly for guidance on air quality and roads. Quick responses help limit harm from these situations.

We will bring you more news of the blaze at Selwo as we get it.

Steve Marshall, Brit expat in Spain, knows all about dealing with the relentless strength of the sun in southern Spain. He recently underwent serious surgery for skin cancer due to sun overexposure on the Costa del Sol. He now shares his many years of expert advice on sun strength and heat management for local expats who must prepare for rising summer temperatures.

His guidance covers hydration, sun protection and neighbour support.

Focus on daily hydration habits

Marshall gave this advice on hydration. “Firstly, it is very important to drink lots of water during the day even if you do not feel like it. Avoid too much alcohol, and that includes beer which will dehydrate you and reduce your water intake.” A common mistake many northern European residents and visitors to the Costas make, time and time again.

Protect skin with proper clothing and timing

He continued with sun protection guidance. “If you do need to go out wear a wide brimmed hat and apply sunscreen of at least Factor 50 regularly. That includes after going into the sea or your pool”. Steve learned the hard way this tip. It’s no joke what the rays of the sun in southern Spain are capable of.

Reduce indoor heat and electricity costs

Home cooling advice soon followed, something Steve has learned only too well. “Keep blinds and curtains closed to keep rooms cool and reduce the need for fans where possible. Electricity is now so expensive.” In places like the UK, it’s common practice to open windows when it’s hot. But, this can have the opposite effect in Spain.

Lock doors and windows to deter intruders

Marshall shared his story from a personal incident. “We thought we were secure until we were burgled in the night having forced open our terrace sliding doors.” He recommended a simple device and alarm. “TOP TIP I learned the hard way was to put a sawn off broom handle in the runner making opening practically impossible and we installed an alarm system.”

Look out for neighbours in the community

Marshall ended his email to the Euro Weekly News with neighbour support advice for all. “This is also the time to look out for neighbours. A brief call or a few minutes to pop in will be very much appreciated and will be reciprocated. You look out for them and they will look out for you. Is not that what community is all about?”

Guests will have the opportunity to view the public display from July right through to October.

Environmental surrealism walks hand in hand with fine art

Gallery schedules run from Wednesday to Sunday weekly, with doors open from 10:30am until 2pm, and reopening for evening sessions between 6:30 pm and 10pm. Mondays and Tuesdays will be closed to the public.

His professional background balances traditional pictorial arts with professional art direction in high-profile television commercials, music videos, and major cinema. Media enthusiasts may recognize his behind-the-scenes set designs for global brands like Coca-Cola and IKEA, along with collaborations with filmmaker Pedro Almodovar. Known additionally for creating public murals and event posters, his creative fine art has previously featured in galleries across Paris, Venice, Mexico, and Buenos Aires.

Caldaza describes his inspriration behind Biomagico, “Nowadays human beings have significantly lost their link with nature, with an estimated decrease of more than sixty percent in this connection during the last 200 years,” to which he added that “modern life in cities has distanced people from natural environments, causing daily interaction with it to be minimal, giving rise to a phenomenon known as ‘extinction of experience’ or ‘disconnection from nature’”.

Opening night schedule confirmed

Doors open for the official launch gathering this Thursday, 9 July, starting at 6:30pm. Setting the pieces inside Casa de los Navajas Torremolinos gives the exhibition an interesting contrast, placing contemporary eco-surrealism inside a landmark local building.
