Mallorca is preparing for a major celebration of international cinema as Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF) returns for its 15th edition, bringing acclaimed filmmakers, actors and cinematographers to the island.
The festival will run from October 28 to November 4, 2026, with Oscar-winning director Edward Berger, German actress Iris Berben and renowned cinematographer Matthew Libatique among the biggest names confirmed for this year’s event.
The announcement was made during a special presentation at the INNSiDE Calviá Beach Hotel in Magaluf, where organisers also revealed a new partnership that will see EMIFF bring part of its programme to Calvià for the first time.
Oscar-winning director Edward Berger coming to Mallorca
One of the festival’s headline guests will be Edward Berger, the director behind the Oscar-winning All Quiet on the Western Front.
Berger will receive EMIFF’s Evolution VISION Award, which recognises filmmakers whose creative approach and international work have contributed to contemporary cinema.
His 2022 adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s anti-war novel All Quiet on the Western Front won four Academy Awards, including Best International Feature Film. He followed that success with Conclave, the 2024 thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini.
Berger is also attached as a producer to Fatherland, directed by Pawel Pawlikowski. EMIFF plans to hold a special screening of the film, followed by a conversation with Berger and producer Jeanne Tremsal.
German film icon Iris Berben honoured
German actress Iris Berben will receive the first-ever Evolution ICON Award at the festival’s opening gala on October 28 at the Palau de Congressos de Palma.
Berben has built a career spanning several decades across German film and television, becoming one of the country’s best-known screen performers.
Her contribution to German cinema has also extended beyond acting. From 2010 to 2019, she served as president of the German Film Academy, representing professionals working across the country’s film industry.
EMIFF says its new ICON award has been created to recognise artists whose careers have had a lasting influence on cinema and the wider creative community.
Black Swan cinematographer Matthew Libatique joins festival
Another major international guest will be Matthew Libatique, ASC, who will receive the Cinematography ICON Award during the opening gala.
Libatique is particularly well known for his long-running creative partnership with director Darren Aronofsky.
Their collaborations include Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, Black Swan and Mother!. His other credits include A Star Is Born and Maestro.
The cinematographer has received several Academy Award nominations during his career.
His visit will form part of the fifth edition of EMIFF’s Cinematography Focus, running from October 28 to 30.
As well as receiving his award, Libatique will participate in an Icon Talk and a cinematography round table, giving festival audiences and industry professionals the chance to hear about his approach to visual storytelling and filmmaking.
Calvià joins Evolution Mallorca for first time
This year’s festival will also mark a new chapter for EMIFF, with Calvià becoming one of its locations for the first time.
The partnership with the Ajuntament de Calvià comes as the municipality celebrates its Year of Cinema, with local authorities seeking to promote audiovisual production as a cultural and economic activity.
The collaboration will include several events designed to showcase Calvià as a potential filming location.
On October 23 and 24, the Port Adriano car park will become an open-air cinema for two nights as part of EMIFF’s Cine con Coche event. Two screenings will take place each evening, at 7.30pm and 9.30pm.
The festival and Calvià will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of ACIB, the Associació de Cineastes de les Illes Balears, on October 30 at the Meliá Calvià South Beach Hotel in Magaluf. The event will feature work created by ACIB members alongside films, documentaries and advertising productions filmed in Calvià.
Filmmakers to explore Mallorca’s film locations
The new partnership will continue until the final day of the festival.
On November 4, Calvià will form part of EMIFF’s traditional Mallorca Go! Location Island Tour, when filmmakers and industry professionals will visit locations around the municipality. The group will include producers, directors, cinematographers and screenwriters, who will be introduced to the area’s filming locations, infrastructure and resources available to productions.
Calvià Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual said having two major film festivals on the island represented an opportunity to reinforce the municipality’s commitment to cinema and attract visitors outside the traditional tourism season.
Marc Clotet to lead festival jury
Spanish actor and producer Marc Clotet will serve as president of the EMIFF 2026 jury.
His relationship with the festival goes back to its very beginning. Clotet appeared in The Sleeping Voice, the film that opened EMIFF’s inaugural edition in 2012. Fifteen editions later, he will return to Mallorca in the role of jury president.
Clotet has worked across film, television and theatre and received a Goya nomination for his performance in The Sleeping Voice. He is also a co-founder of Funicular Films, which has developed projects including the series This Is Not Sweden and the feature film Viva.
More than 30 Balearic projects selected
Alongside the international stars, EMIFF is placing a strong focus on filmmakers from the islands.
The Made in Balearic Islands 2026 section features more than 32 projects, including 17 short films, seven feature films, five documentary shorts and three student shorts.
There will also be 13 screenwriting projects from the Balearic Islands competing in the festival’s screenwriting competition. Among those involved are filmmakers including Miki Durán, Andreu Fullana, Miguel Ekk, Marga Melià, Mar Serna, Ferran Bex, Neus Cortés and Toni Pons.
The international feature Elena’s Shift, starring actress Maria Dragus, is also competing for Best Feature Film in the Made in Balearic Islands section.
Mallorca prepares for eight days of cinema
Founded in Palma in 2012 by Sandra Lipski, EMIFF has grown into an international independent film festival built around the idea of connecting filmmakers, audiences and industry professionals from different countries.
Sandra Lipski, founder and director of EMIFF, said the festival was proud to reach its 15th edition while continuing to connect international filmmakers with local talent.
The festival’s full programme and screening schedules will be announced on October 15.
